Volleyball
Current National Federation of State High School Associations Volleyball Rules and the following University of Kentucky Intramural Rules and Modifications will govern play:
Eligibility
University of Kentucky Intramural events are open to all current UK and BCTC students and all regular UK and BCTC faculty and staff with the following exceptions.
- Former professional players in the offered event are ineligible for Intramural play.
- Former college and university varsity players are ineligible for one calendar year following their last college or university match.
- Current university club sport members are limited to 2 per intramural team.
- For Co–Rec teams only‚ spouses of eligible UK and BCTC students‚ faculty and staff may participate but must be on the same Co–Rec team rosters as their UK or BCTC spouse.
Valid Identification
- Valid UK or BCTC Student‚ Faculty and Staff IDs required to enter all UK Intramural events. Valid IDs are also required to enter the Seaton Center.
- For Co–Rec events only‚ spouses of eligible UK and BCTC Intramural participants must present a valid driver’s license to participate.
Miscellaneous
- No Jewelry ––– necklaces‚ earrings‚ finger rings‚ bracelets‚ etc. ––– shall be permitted during play.
- Hair devices made of soft material may be worn to control the hair. Hair adornments made of soft material and no more than 2 inches wide may be worn.
- No hats‚ bandanas‚ skull caps or other head wear is permitted. Only a terry–cloth headband made for athletic wear is permitted.
Team and Players
- A match is played by two teams of 6 players.
- Teams may start and play with 5 players‚ only if there are no substitutes available. The 10–minute rule is in effect.
- Roster limits for all teams is 12 players.
- A player may play for only one single sex team (ex. Either fraternity or independent men’s A)‚ but may also play on a Co–Rec team. Conflicts between team schedules are the responsibility of the individual player to resolve.
- To be eligible for playoff competition‚ a player must play in at least one regular season match. A player is not officially on a team roster until he/she has checked into a regular season match.
Substitutions
- Substitutions can be made during any dead ball‚ must go in to same position as substituted player (cannot change positions).
- No substitutions can be made during a live ball or after the referee has signaled for serve.
The Match
- A match will consist of the best 2 out of 3 games.
- A team having less than 5 players once the 10–minute rule expires shall forfeit that match.
- The 10–Minute Rule: Should a team not be prepared for play with the minimum number of players needed at the time play is called‚ the team in question shall have 10–minutes to fill its vacant spots. Starting with the initial call and for each subsequent minute‚ the prepared opponent shall be awarded one point. If the team does not become prepared and 10–minutes elapses‚ the game shall be forfeit. If the team does become prepared‚ the opponent automatically wins the coin toss and will make its choice (see below) and the match will proceed with the score in place.
The Game
- The winner of the coin toss will have the following choices:
- choice of playing area
- first serve
- receiving of service
- The options will be reversed for the 2nd game.
- To begin the 3rd game repeat the coin toss with the winner having the choice of options. Note: There is no court exchange after 8 points.
Scoring
- 2 out of 3 games is a match
- 25– point rally scoring (win by two points with no cap on winning score)
- 15– point rally scoring for the third game (win by two points with no cap on winning score)
- When a side–out is awarded to a team‚ that team shall rotate clockwise one position. (a point is awarded as the team rotates)
Timing
- No time limit.
- Team Time Outs:
- Each team is allowed 2 per game.
- Time outs will be 30 seconds in length.
- Official’s Time Outs:
- For injuries – if the official stops the game for an injured player that player must leave the game.
- Foreign object on the court or a ball enters the court from another court. (That point would be replayed).
Playing the Game
- Net Height
- Men’s and Co–Rec: 7Ft. 11 5/8 inches
- Women’s: 7Ft. 4 1/8 inches
- Contacting The Ball
- The ball may be played 3 times before crossing the net.
- A player may go outside of the court to play the ball. However‚ a player may not cross the net extended‚ or enter an adjacent court to play a ball.
- Legal contact is a touch of the ball by a player’s body above and including the waist which does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest or involve prolonged contact with a player’s body.
- The ball must be clearly and cleanly hit.
- Violations and Fouls
- Double Hit – hitting two parts of the body in succession‚ however slight. It is a double hit if it strikes both wrists‚ fists‚ arms‚ or chest if the hands are not put together in some manner.
- Carry – if a ball appears to stick to the hand or hands or appears to come to rest in the hands of a player.
- More than three hits by one team before the ball goes over the net.
- Serving errors.
- Touching the net while ball is in play.
- Player crossing the center line.
- Ball out–of–bounds
- Touching basketball goals.
- When touching anything outside of the boundary lines (lines are in play).
- A ball touching a light fixture or any other part of ceiling:
- coming down on the same side of the court is still in play
- going over the net will result in a side out or point.
- Ball contacting another object.
- Ball touches net during serve.
- Screening – A screen is an act‚ intentional or unintentional‚ which obstructs the opponent’s view of the server or the flight of the ball from the server.
- Serving – All players‚ other than the server‚ shall be within the playing area (but may touch the boundary lines) when the ball is served. The server must serve from within the serving area and shall not touch the lines bounding this area at the instant the ball is contacted when hit for the serve. The serving area encompasses the entire baseline of the court but must be between the sidelines extended.
- Blocking – Blocking at the net is allowed by front row players only. A blocker may reach over the net to block a ball that is being returned to his court or when the opposing team has completed their attack. A player that blocks a ball may hit it again. A block is not considered a hit. A ball blocked simultaneously by two players of the same team can be hit again by any player.
Note: If two members of opposing team strike or block the ball simultaneously and it goes out of bounds‚ it is the fault of the team who is behind the direction of the ball.
- Back Row Player
- A back row player may not attempt to block or participate in a block.
- A back row player may not attempt to return a ball that is completely above the top of the net while positioned:
- on or in front of the 10 foot spiking line or it’s out–of–bounds extension.
- in the air‚ having left the floor on or in front of the spiking line or it’s out–of–bounds extension.
Note: In cases where teams are playing with only 5 players the server and the player immediately to his/her left are the designated back row players.
Co–Recreational Rules are generally the same as Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Rules except for the following:
- A match is played by two teams of 6 players (3 men and 3 women). Teams playing with 5 players may play 3 men and 2 women or 3 women and 2 men.
- Net height will be 7 Ft. 11 5/8 inches.
- Substitutions must be of the same sex (male for male and female for female).
- The line–up must alternate between male and female players.
- If the ball is played (hit) 3 times a female must be one of the three hits.
Decisions and Protests
- All decisions by officials will be final.
Note: Only the team captain may approach referee to clarify a rule.
- Protests must be declared at time of incident‚ at that time‚ official will inform team managers‚ and the protest will be decided on the court by officials and supervisor.
- Only eligibility protests will be accepted after the match has been played. Eligibility protests must be submitted in writing to Seaton Center Room 145 by noon the following business day of the game or match in question.
Sportsmanship
Volleyball is a game of sportsmanship‚ etiquette‚ protocol‚ and honor. There is no room for derogatory remarks‚ or violent displays of anger in volleyball.
- It is a violation to:
- Express derogatory remarks to officials or players.
- Yell or stomp your feet to distract opposing players.
- Slam the ball to the floor or throw it blindly in anger.
- The official may‚ according to degree and repetition:
- Warn offender(s). One warning only.
- Award points or side–out.
- Eject offender(s)
- Eliminate a team from the match.
Conduct
The Intramural Sportsmanship Policy is very explicit in explaining conduct necessary to participate in this program. Every participant is expected to know the guidelines set by this policy.
- Teams must maintain a 3.0 QPA as their sportsmanship rating to make the playoffs and to remain in the playoffs. Any team receiving a “D” or lower grade for any one match will have to meet with the Director of Intramurals‚ before playing their next regular season match.
- Any player ejected from a game for any reason shall be suspended from his/her next match (regular season or playoff). The ejected participant is ineligible for all intramural competition until they meet with the Director of Intramurals.
NOTE: Ejected participants‚ coaches‚ or spectators will have two minutes to leave the Seaton Center.
- Fighting: Fighting will not be tolerated in any form. Teams will be responsible for their players. All fighting incidents shall be reported to the Director of Intramurals and teams will be required to meet with the Director before they may play again.
- Any individual or team criticizing or otherwise obstructing‚ boisterously ridiculing or attempting to demean an official shall be liable to expulsion and disciplinary action. In addition‚ the game may be defaulted at the discretion of the referee‚ supervisor‚ or director.
