Campus Community Coalition

 newpartnership

New Partnership

During the Fall of 2000‚ the University of Kentucky introduced a partnership with the Lexington community in the form of a coalition whose mission was to reduce high–risk drinking among college students. Over the past four years‚ the coalition has worked diligently to make changes on UK’s campus. With the support of the coalition‚ the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government passed the Lexington Area Party Plan and the keg registration ordinance. Membership includes individuals who represent UK Faculty‚ Student Affairs‚ University Health Service‚ UK Administration‚ UK Alumni‚ UK students‚ Lexington–Fayette Urban County Government‚ bar owners‚ tavern owners‚ neighborhood associations‚ prevention specialists‚ and UK and LFUCG police forces.

Task Force

During the Spring of 2002‚ President Todd appointed a task force to take a more detailed look at the problem of high–risk drinking on UK’s campus. The task force gave several recommendations to the President after meeting throughout the Spring Semester. You can download the Task Force recommendations here. (pdf)

Meeting Goals

Campus–Community Coalitions such as the one developed at UK are arising all over the nation. The primary focus of a campus–community coalition should be on curtailing the access of underage youths to alcohol and eliminating irresponsible alcohol sales and marketing practices by local bars‚ restaurants‚ and liquor outlets.

Key objectives for such a coalition can include the following:

  • changes in local zoning ordinances to reduce the density of alcohol sales outlets and irresponsible sales and marketing practices;
  • a community–wide program for responsible beverage service; and
  • enhanced and publicized police enforcement of the age 21 drinking and drunk driving laws.

The wisdom of such an approach has been reinforced by new research demonstrating the potential power of community–based coalitions to eliminate mixed–message environments that invite irresponsible alcohol use. High–risk drinking among college students is a community problem‚ and it will take the entire Lexington community to make a real difference in the lives of UK students.
