The College Alcohol Use Student Educators is a group of twenty–two students selected from a cross–section of the student body for their leadership‚ communication skills‚ enthusiasm‚ and interest in educating their peers about issues concerning alcohol. These students receive a small scholarship for their efforts in role modeling‚ dedication to ongoing training and development‚ and commitment to educating other students.
Being a member of The CAUSE is a great experience. The CAUSE begins the semester with a retreat where they get to know each other and also receive training about alcohol education. As a member‚ you have an opportunity to perfect your public speaking skills doing programs and presentations for student organizations campus–wide‚ and The CAUSE has recently began doing outreach programs in area high schools. Members of The CAUSE are role models for the UK community‚ and they have the potential to truly make a difference in the lives of UK students.
Events and activities of The CAUSE include:
- Sponsoring Kentucky Welcome events
- Fall training/retreat
- Programs for University student organizations
- Outreach in area high schools
- Sponsoring awareness weeks throughout year
- Continual education about current alcohol information
Recruitment for The CAUSE takes place each spring. Applications are available in February in Room 518 Patterson Office Tower and they are due the Friday before Spring Break. If you would like to get involved during the fall semester‚ call (859) 257–9687. We would love to have you as a volunteer!
Alcohol Awareness Week
National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week was sponsored by The College Alcohol Use Student Educators (The CAUSE) during the week of October 23–27. The CAUSE chose the theme of the week to be “Don’t Get Smashed‚ BE–WISE–ER.”
Alcohol Awareness Week was filled with fun events for the students.
Monday‚ we hosted a free breakfast outside the main classroom building on UK’s campus. The donated items included doughnuts from Krispy Kreme®‚ chicken biscuits from Chick–Fil–A®‚ sausage biscuits from McDonald’s®‚ a variety of muffins and breads from Atlanta Bread Company®‚ and Kool–Aid® was served in cups with a UK survey statistic reminding the students that a large number of there peers are choosing to drink responsibly. That afternoon we gave away free caramel apples‚ candy and cups to students‚ which we found to be wildly popular. UK Catering provided the apples and they were beautifully decorated.
Tuesday’s event The CAUSE and SAB showed “Monster House‚” in the Worsham Theater on campus and had free drinks‚ candy and popcorn.
Wednesday from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm we hosted a Reality Check. In this recurring program‚ we helped educate fellow students by giving away free t–shirts to students who participated in either of our two activities‚ the corn–hole toss activity while wearing beer goggles or the “walk the line” test with the UK Police‚ who were on hand to talk with students about alcohol. We also provided free pizza̵ which was instantly devoured. It was a great success‚ and throughout the week we were able to educate UK students about the dangers of high–risk alcohol use while also letting students know about The CAUSE.
Spring Break Safety Week
