Andrew Smith accepts the Brown-Forman contribution on behalf of the University while Provost Subbaswamy and Mark McCallum, Brown-Forman's Director of Marketing, lend their support.Brown-Forman advances Alcohol Education at UK with $200,000 Gift

Officials of Louisville's Brown-Forman Corporation, one of the largest American-owned companies in the wine and spirits business, visited the University of Kentucky campus earlier in the month to present a $200,000 gift to Andrew Smith and the UK Office of Alcohol and Health Education (AHEO).

The gift, which will be given over a three-year period, will enable the expansion of educational and prevention programs for all UK students.

"We will be able to expand our 'Question Authority' campaign to reach out to the freshman class during the first week of classes in the fall, a time when young people are particularly vulnerable to excessive alcohol consumption," said Andrew Smith, director of AHEO.

Although Brown-Forman has funded many alcohol harm reduction programs over the last two decades, this is the first time that the company has directly funded such a program on a college campus.

"We want to be a more direct part of the solution to the problems of alcohol misuse and abuse, and what better place to start than in our home state with a great partner such as the University of Kentucky," said Mark McCallum, Brown-Forman's chief marketing officer.

He added, "Facts show that (UK's) program has been highly effective in its eight-year history in reducing both student drunk driving and public intoxication arrests."

The 2008-2009 CAUSE Applications are in!

If you are already‚ or interested in becoming:

  • A positive role model for underclassmen and your peers.
  • Educated on the positive and negative effects of alcohol and drugs on your health.
  • A student leader.
  • A community leader.
  • An educator.

Then join the CAUSE (College Alcohol Use Student Educators)!!!

The CAUSE is a group of active and socially conscious students dedicated to helping educate peers and the surrounding community on the harmful effects of high-risk alcohol use. Through presentations to fellow students‚ campus-wide events such as Spring Break Safety Week and Alcohol Awareness Week‚ and Reality Check‚ this organization prides itself on the belief that college students don’t have to use alcohol to have fun. Although we do believe that abstaining from alcohol is the safest choice to make‚ we also focus on the safety of low-risk drinking if people choose to consume alcohol.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the CAUSE‚ please apply! Applications can be sent to 242 Johnson Center or 518 Patterson Office Tower or via email to andrew.smith02@uky.edu.

Recovery Support Group

Recovery Support was designed with University of Kentucky undergraduates (ages 18-23) in mind. Although many Alcoholics Anonymous and other related support groups regularly meet in the surrounding Lexington area‚ there are only a few such groups available on campus. Recovery Support is a student run group held every week in the Student Center. No health professionals attend and no educational information is provided. It is strictly a voluntary group for students who feel they may have a drug and/or alcohol problem or are in recovery. Students are given a chance to voice their concerns and interact with each other in an informal environment. Students may come at any time during the school year and attend as many or few meetings as they like. The group meets every Thursday at 6pm in room 251 of the Student Center. For more information‚ please contact Brett Begley.
