Parent Tips

Tackling underage drinking on college campuses and promoting responsible drinking among students 21 and older requires a team approach – one involving the University of Kentucky community and parents of UK students. We want to offer some tips that may help you in continuing to support your student in making smart decisions with alcohol while they are here at UK.

 continuedialog

Continue Dialog

It is important for you to continue talking with your son or daughter about their alcohol use. They still value what you say‚ so it is important for you to continue offering your input. You know your son or daughter better than anyone‚ and you may be the best gauge of what is going on in his or her life. Be sure and discuss any concerns you may have.

 sharefacts

Share Facts

Research has found that many college students grossly overestimate the amount of alcohol that is consumed by their peers. They are influenced by their peers‚ so they will often drink the amount they perceive to be the norm. It is important for you to let them know the facts. The majority of UK students actually make smart decisions with alcohol. If your student is choosing to drink in a low–risk way‚ they are actually in the majority‚ not the minority.

Also‚ avoid telling your own personal college war stories. Drinking today is very different than it used to be. College students who choose to drink in a high–risk way drink more often and the quantity they drink is much greater than in previous years.

 sharedexpectations

Shared Expectations

College is a huge investment of both time and money. You need to let your student know that academics are the first priority while they are here at UK. You should also let them know that you expect them to obey state laws as well as University policy.

Campus Resources

We encourage your student to take advantage of the many free resources that the University of Kentucky has to offer. The Alcohol Education Office‚ the Counseling & Testing Center‚ and the University Health Service.

 rolemodel

Be a Role Mode

As a parent of a college student‚ it is important for you to role model the behavior that you hope your son or daughter to have while they are here at the University of Kentucky.
