Information for Parents and Families

Greetings from the University of Kentucky!

In a few short months, your student will officially join the UK family. The best way for your new Wildcat to get started is by taking full advantage of K Week, our fall welcome week, which starts Friday, August 23. A variety of events and activities have been planned during K Week to address the various aspects of the transition to college life. Your student will receive a full K Week schedule of events when he or she arrives on campus in August. Everyone will be placed in small groups known as K Teams which are led by members of the K Crew, upperclass student leaders who will serve as peer mentors for students throughout their first year on campus.

K Week is not just for students! There are opportunities for the families of our students to participate as well. We understand that students and families are eager to get living situations set up, but please make time to take advantage of the events going on Friday and Saturday. For your convenience, an abbreviated schedule of events can be found below. Please note the required K Team meetings on Friday and Saturday night and make sure your student is in attendance.

To get acclimated to the academic life of the University, your student is expected to have read Where Am I Wearing?, the Common Reading Experience book that he or she received at Advising Conferences. This book will first be discussed during K Week. Your student can also look forward to hearing from the author, Kelsey Timmerman, when he visits campus on October 15.

Finally, we encourage you to consider joining the UK Parent Association if you have not done so already. For less than $3 a month for an annual membership, you will have access to a number of benefits that will help you support your UK student. To learn more, visit www.uky.edu/parents.

We look forward to working with you and your student this fall and in the coming years!

Best wishes,

Office of New Student & Parent Programs
