- UK Academic Alert and Targeted Retention Strategies - This presentation provides students with an overview of the institutional research related to applied, admitted, enrolled, retained, and graduated students. More importantly, the presentation applies the data to a discussion of some targeted retention strategies UK uses to help each student succeed from admissions through graduation. Research will be presented that helps students understand how they can better adjust to college life and increase their chances of being successful academically. To schedule, contact one of the following guest presenters: Roger Sugarman, Ph.D., Director of Institutional Research, rpsuga0@email.uky.edu, (859) 257-7989; Chela Kaplan; Director of Retention and Student Success, crkapl01@email.uky.edu. (859) 257-4984; or Jason Pieratt, Associate Registrar for Enrollment Management, jtpier2@uky.edu, (859) 257-2637.
- Tour of UK Art Museum at the University of Kentucky – The Art Museum provides a rich resource for object-based learning in history, culture and aesthetics. Tours can be planned to focus on subject areas of your choice, and the staff welcome you to plan assignments based on the museum experience. To schedule guided or unguided tours of the museum, please contact the Director of Education, Deborah Borrowdale-Cox, at 257-6199 or dborrowdalecox@uky.edu.
- Campus Safety – Contact Officer Alan Saylor at 257-5108 or email alsayl1@pop.uky.edu at least two weeks in advance to schedule this session.
- Career Decision Making – College years are an important time for students to explore and consolidate their identity. Determining what one wants to do for a future career is part of this development. However, it is normal to be uncertain about one’s career path, especially during the first year of college. This program led by Counseling & Testing Center staff will introduce students to some of the factors that weigh into such a decision-making process and begin an exploration of some of those factors. Keep in mind that determining a career path and choosing a major is more of a process than a one-time decision. Because of the complicated nature of this process, the purpose of the session is not for you to leave with a major in hand. The goal is for you to gain a better understanding of your individual situation and provide you with information and resources that can help you navigate the process in a timely and effective manner. Sessions are available on a limited first-come, first-serve basis. Preference will be given to new UK 101 instructors and those not having another program being done by C&T staff. Call Dr. Felito Aldarondo at the Counseling & Testing Center (257-8701) or email faldaro@uky.edu to schedule a presentation.
- Ask the Dietitian – (40-minute session) This session focuses on healthful eating and exercise while at college. Topics will vary based on questions from the students. The conversation generally covers how to avoid the “freshmen 15,” healthful eating options at campus dining facilities, fad diets, late night eating, the importance of eating breakfast and not skipping meals, eating on the run, healthful snacks, and exercise basics. At the end of this session students should be able to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy dietary options around campus and have a greater understanding of healthy weight management techniques. To schedule this session, contact Jill Kindy, RD, CSSD, University Health Service, 323-5823 or jmkind2@uky.edu.
- Class Visit with Students Enrolled in “English as a Second Language” Class – To invite ESL students to your class, email Lina Crocker at crocker@uky.edu. You may invite the ESL students to visit your class twice so that relationships can be formed. ESL students are typically available from 8 a.m. to 12 noon; if your class meets after 12 noon, you can still contact Lina to inquire about the availability of students at a later time. During this class, UK 101 instructors have paired each UK 101 student with an international student. Instructors provide conversation topics such as “Share something about your home country or state that you are proud of.”
- Getting Involved on Campus – Contact the Center for Student Involvement for options on how to encourage your students to get involved on campus. We can provide student/staff representatives for an in-class presentation, community service possibilities, or a UK 101 peer instructor-led option. Refer to lesson plan for an activity and discussion questions addressing the differences between having a college degree and being an educated person.
- Healthy Relationships – This presentation provides information on the core qualities or conditions of a satisfying and stable relationship. The threats and fatal flaws to successful relationships as well as myths and fallacies about relationships will also be addressed. The goal is to give students some tools and criteria to evaluate whether their relationships are healthy and predictive of stability over time. Sessions are available on a limited first-come, first-serve basis. Preference will be given to new UK 101 instructors and those not having another program being done by C&T staff. The lesson plan includes the game instructions, an example game board, and questions/answers. A handout is also provided to give students during the game as a reference. The handouts can be duplicated for you in 518 Patterson Office Tower. Please call 257-6597 a week in advance to request the copies.

- Sex and the Campus – (40-minute session). College is a time when many students are making sexual decisions and choices. For many students, the choice will be postponement of sex. Others are already engaging in sexual activity or will be in the very near future. This class is intended to educate students about sexually transmitted infections, decision-making, and low-risk choices. At the end of this class session, students should be able to name the STI’s most common on college campuses with general knowledge of transmission, symptomatology, and potential complications. They will also be able to verbalize a plan for individual risk reduction. If you so choose, you may teach this session yourself using the PowerPoint presentation and the lesson plan prepared by University Health Service. QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) stands for three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to get a person who is at-risk the help he/she needs. QPR includes information on the problem of suicide locally and nationally, common myths and facts associated with suicide, warning signs of suicide, methods for persuading suicidal individuals to get help, and ways of referring at-risk people to resources.
