What is the purpose of the UK Parent Association?
Recognizing that parents play an important role in the lives of their college students, the UK Parent
Association strives to involve parents in University activities as well as inform them of dates, deadlines, opportunities, policies, and procedures that affect them and their students. The Parent
Association exists to build community and disseminate information to parents. It does not intercede with other University departments or lobby outside agencies. The Parent Association seeks to build a
partnership and encourage mutual understanding between the University, its students, and their families.
What does the Parent Advisory Council do? How can I join the Parent Advisory Council?
The Parent Advisory Council represents the diverse viewpoints of
UK parents to the Dean of Students Office. Council members meet each semester with members of the administration as well as participate in events such as Kentucky Welcome, Summer Advising Conferences,
and Family Weekend. The Parent Association Coordinator consults the Council throughout the school year to solicit feedback on University activities and events.
Applications to join the Parent Advisory Council are available online on the Parent Advisory Council page. You may also call (859) 257-6597 or e-mail parents@lsv.uky.edu to request an application.
How can I support the UK Parent Association?
The Parent Association is a self-supporting organization that does not receive
funding from the University. Therefore, private support is essential to
the continuation of UKPA programs and services, including Family Weekend
and parent publications. While the Parent Association conducts an annual
phonathon, you can make a income tax-deductible gift to the Parent Association
at any time. Call the Office of Annual Giving at (800) 875-6272 or make
a credit card gift online at iweb.uky.edu/giveonline/.
Make sure you designate your gift to go to the Parent Association. Your
support is greatly appreciated!
How can I support my son or daughter while he or she is at UK?
Parenting a college student requires a delicate balancing act. College students still
value their parents' opinions (whether you believe it or not) but sometimes may be too reliant on you to do things for them. As much as you want to help your son or daughter, in some situations you may
want to resist the temptation to step in and handle things for him or her. Obviously certain situations will require you to intervene, especially when the health and well-being on your student is
involved. However, your son or daughter will benefit from the experience of taking responsibility for his or her college matters. Of course, you best know your sons and daughters and their strengths
and weaknesses. This advice is simply based on extensive experience working with college students and the development that takes place during their time on campus.
When is Family Weekend?
The date for Family Weekend 2009 will be November 6- 8.
Check back for more information, including a complete schedule of events,
on the Family Weekend page.
When is Lil' Sibs Weekend?
Resident Student Association hosts Lil' Sibs Weekend each spring. Call (859) 323-1919 for more information.
How can I send a gift to my son or daughter?
Contact Kennedy Book Store’s Big Blue Baskets, the only gift service in Lexington endorsed by the UK Parent Association and UK Resident Student Association. They will deliver a special gift to your son or daughter whether they live on-campus or off-campus. They can be reached at www.kennedys.com or by calling (859) 252-0331 or 1-800-892-5165. A portion of the proceeds from each sale goes to UKPA and UK RSA.
How do I subscribe or unsubscribe to the Parent Association Cat Chat electronic newsletter?
If you are interested in receiving Cat Chat, please
register with the UK Parent Association by providing the following information: parent/guardian name, home address and phone number, e-mail address, UK student name(s), and student academic year
(freshman, sophomore, etc.). Parents who are alumni of UK are asked to report that as well. There is no cost to register, and this information is for UK Parent Association use only. To register, please
send an e-mail to parents@lsv.uky.edu or call (859) 257-6597.
Why am I receiving multiple copies of Cat Chat e-mails?
If you have more than one student enrolled at UK, you may be receiving multiple e-mails. There
are actually four Cat Chat newsletters based on students' academic classifications. While some information is sent to all UK parents, parents of first-year students may occasionally receive different
information than parents of seniors, etc. If you would prefer not to receive multiple e-mails, send an e-mail to
parents@lsv.uky.edu and ask to be removed from one of the lists.
Where can I get the Parent Association's UK Mom/Dad/Grandparent bumper stickers?
The Parent Association will happily send you bumper stickers at no
cost. Send an e-mail to parents@lsv.uky.edu or call (859) 257-6597 with your request. Please indicate which bumper stickers you would
like (including quantity) and where they should be sent.
Where can I find copies of old Cat Chat e-mails or Parent Association publications such as the Insider's Guide parent handbook?
Follow the links on
your left to find the Parent Association publication.
Why am I not receiving UK Parent Association publications?
The Parent Association gets its mailing list from the Registrar's Office, so if your
student does not have up-to-date contact information on file, you and your student may not be receiving mail from the University. Your student can update his or her permanent address on webUK
(webuk.uky.edu/). If you do not live at your student's permanent address (in the case of divorce or separation from your student's other parent), please contact the
Parent Association and give us your current address. We maintain a separate mailing list in those cases.
What should I do if my student has a problem and I don't know who to contact?
Contact the UK Parent Association. While we may not have an answer
for you immediately, we are happy to help you get in touch with the appropriate office. You can reach Nancy Stephens, Parent Association Coordinator, at
parents@lsv.uky.edu or (859) 257-6597. The Parent Association is here to help you navigate a large campus.
