How secure are the residence halls?
There are a number of measures in place to provide a safe living environment for our students. The front doors of
all residence halls are guarded by a card access system. The front desks of all residence halls are staffed 24 hours a day. All visitors must check-in at the front desk and be escorted at all times.
Security cameras are installed in all residence halls and are monitored by front desk staff. Sprinklers and smoke detectors are in place in all halls. Students are encouraged to lock their doors when
they are gone and not to prop any exterior doors open.
When does my son or daughter have to move out after final exams?
Students are expected to move out the day of their last final exam. Students who are
unable to move out at that time should contact their Hall Director in order to receive permission to stay later.
Does my son or daughter need to remove any items from his or her room during breaks?
Students do not have to remove any items from their rooms during
Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks. However, we recommend that students take small valuables home with them over the break periods. Even though the residence halls are locked during the breaks,
staff members are not available to monitor the buildings and cannot guarantee the security of the rooms.
What is UK's visitation policy for the residence halls?
Different residence halls have different policies ranging from 24-7 visitation to limited
visitation. Regardless of which policy is in place, all guests must sign in and be escorted at all times. More information is available at
www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/ResidenceLife/.

The mail that I sent to my son or daughter's residence hall was never received. What should we do?
Your son or daughter should visit the main campus
branch of the U.S. Post Office located in the basement of the Whitehall Classroom Building to report the loss.
What should my student do if he or she does not get along with his or her roommate?
At the beginning of each school year, Resident Advisors (R.A.s)
sit down with each roommate pair and talk over issues that commonly cause conflict. This conversation results in a written agreement between the roommates that addresses each of these issues. If your
student is having conflict with his or her roommate, we recommend that your student contact the R.A. Depending on the circumstances, the R.A. can help facilitate a discussion about the problem
behaviors and possibly re-write the roommate agreement. If potential policy violations are involved, the person accused of violating policy may be brought through the hall disciplinary process. In any
event, contacting the R.A. or Hall Director is the best first step to take when addressing roommate conflicts.
