Green Residence Hall Room Competition!
Think you’ve got the greenest dorm room on campus? Prove it and you could win some great prizes. All it takes to enter is a great essay and pictures to back it up! All entries are due by April 15th and the winners will be announced on Earthday‚ April 22nd. If you are interested in entering the competition please email reslifereycling@lsv.uky.edu for full contest details. All participants in the Green ResHall Room Competition will receive a free Earthdays in the Bluegrass T-Shirt!

Community Service Events
Volunteering is a great way to experience the beauty of the bluegrass while helping preserve it! Get your hands dirty keeping KY clean at these service events. All volunteers will receive a free Earthdays in the Bluegrass t-shirt.

Film Screenings
This year’s selection of films includes documentaries and animated feature films. Topics range from the whimsical to the dire. All films are FREE and will be screened in the UK Student Center. All films are being co-sponsored by the Student Film Series unless otherwise noted.

Fossil Fools Day
Everywhere‚ all day!
On April 1‚ 2008 young people from around the world are rising up to show the world that we refuse to fool around with climate change and our future. Led by the Energy Action Coalition‚ Canadian Youth Climate Coalition‚ and Rising Tide‚ on April 1 we will take collective action to turn the tide away from fossil fuel dependence and towards a clean and just energy revolution. On this historic day of action we will tear down the dirty energy that stands in our way‚ while building the better world we need. http://fossilfools08.org

Car-Free Day!
Everywhere‚ all day!

Share the Road! Group Bicycle Ride
5 pm Woodland Park
Bicycling is by far the best way to get around our campus and our community. It’s a CLEANER‚ HEALTHIER‚ CHEAPER‚ and FASTER way to travel. However‚ it can be scary and intimidating to get back on a bike if you haven’t been on one in years. Riding in traffic can be stressful stuff too. This ride will begin with a discussion of local bicycling ordinances and will be a great opportunity to gain confidence riding your bicycle on the street. Helmets strongly recommended!

Community Gardening Workshop and Volunteer Day
12:30-3:30pm Winburn Community Action Center
Community gardens are incredible assets to communities and educational opportunities for people of all ages. They offer space for community art‚ gardening and gathering. This workshop will include some fun hands-on work in one of North Lexington’s newest community garden projects. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Carpool will leave from the Student Center Parking Lot at 12:30pm and will return at 3:30pm. Connecting Climate Change and Public Health

All week long the UK Student Public Health Association will be handing out information on climate change and have giveaways such as reusable grocery bags and condoms (for population control!!!)

Electronics Recycling!!!
Old Furrows Building‚ on Versailles Road (near Redmile Rd)
During the first full week of April‚ LFUCG will be accepting e-waste to be recycled. Please take your unwanted electronics (microwaves‚ TVs‚ computers‚ VCRs‚ and printers‚ to the LFUCG Community Center located in the Old Furrows Building‚ on Versailles Road. Enter on Nancy Hanks Drive‚ of Red Mile Road. Hours of operation are 8am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday; Saturday 8am to noon. Call Lexcall at 311 or 425-2255 for more information.

Social Justice and Sustainability

This presentation will focus on the impact our consumer choices have on social justice (i.e. other people’s lives) world wide. Fair Trade certification will be discussed and we will have free samples of a wide variety of YUMMY fair trade products like coffee‚ bananas‚ chocolate and more.

During World War II‚ in the face of food and other scarcities‚ Lexington joined towns and cities across the country in growing its own food. The Victory Gardens were a source of pride – and a way to help “win the peace” on the homefront.

Garbage: The Revolution Starts at Home

A feature documentary about how the family household has become one of the most ferocious environmental predators of our time. Steve Feese‚ director of solid waste for LFUCG‚ will introduce the film and present on the economic and environmental impacts of waste reduction in the bluegrass. Co-sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? War’s Catastrophic toll on the Earth

In this presentation‚ Rebecca Glasscock‚ BCTC professor of Geography‚ will look at the one-two punch of war and the preparation for war. The 11th Hour is a 2007 feature film documentary‚ created‚ produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio‚ on the state of the natural environment. Recently‚ we learned of our country’s largest ever recall of meat – 143 million pounds. The humane treatment of livestock‚ the suffering of farmers in Mexico‚ the use of synthetic pesticides‚ and nutritional deficiencies are all aspects of Aloma Dew’s thesis – that eating is a moral act.

The Political Ecology of the Seed

Panel discussion: Water Issues in the Bluegrass

Water experts from the Bluegrass area will join together for a discussion panel on current water issues. Panelists will include Charlie Martin from Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government to address the EPA Consent Decree‚ Steve Workman from UK’s Cane Run restoration project‚ Sandy Camargo with CDP Engineers to discuss their watershed efforts‚ and a representative from KY American Water Company to discuss water supply issues.

Porkfest at Holmes Hall

This annual barbeque has gone GREEN and joined up with Habitat for Humanity. The pork will be purchased locally and will be free of antibiotics‚ steroids‚ and hormones. Ale–8–1’s®‚ a soft drink from Winchester‚ KY‚ will be served from returnable bottles thus creating zero waste and supporting the local economy. There will be lots of activities. Also‚ event organizers are offering a free meal if you participate in the April 19th Habitat build (see Holmes Staff for more detials) and a discount if you bring your own non–disposable plate and cup. $4 per person/$2 per person if you bring your own plate and cup. Bike the Bluegrass
1pm-4pm Wildcat Wheels Campus Bike Shop (Basement of Blazer Hall near corner of MLK and Euclid Ave.)
Easy 20 mile ride in the heart of bluegrass horse country. All are welcome and none will be left behind. Helmets strongly recommended. Some helmets will be provided by Wildcat Wheels. Don’t have a bike but still want to ride? Contact the Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library (wildcatwheels@gmail.com or www.wildcatwheels.org) and reserve one! This is a great way to see some of our state’s most spectacular horse farms and get more comfortable riding your bike as a form of transportation. The tour will be led by experienced local cyclists and followed by a support vehicle in case of emergencies.

Tour of Coal Powered Heat Plant and Delta Room
Noon Front Steps of Peterson Service Building (Between Limestone and Upper in front of Taylor Education)
UK burns more than 40‚000 tons of coal a year to generate heat and steam on campus. There will be a 30 min tour of the coal-fired heat plant followed by a brief tour of the Delta Control Room‚ the central power control center for campus. Come see how we use coal and discuss the impacts of our energy choices. Contact Robin Michler for more details at michler@uky.edu.
