Living on Campus at UK
It is a proven fact around the country – supported by Alexander Astin’s research – students who live on campus are more likely to interact with professors‚ attend cultural events and participate in clubs and other student organizations. They make more lasting connections to the University community and develop social networks that will take them throughout their academic career. To the point – students who live on campus are more likely to succeed and advance more quickly while in college. Opportunities abound to be involved in campus life – but it is up to you to take advantage of them!
Living on campus at UK is a great way to learn about campus traditions‚ get to know lots of people and experience new things. You will be close to classes‚ find your favorite place to eat (Blazer‚ Commons Market‚ K–Lair‚ the Student Center and others)‚ meet people from all over the state‚ the country‚ and the world and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. We have a variety of residence hall experiences on the north‚ central‚ and south campus neighborhoods and each community is unique.

How can Residence Life help you?
Each residence hall has a live-in staff of Resident Advisors (RAs) and Hall Directors who are there to help you be successful. Our staff is carefully selected and trained to help you adjust to being on campus and what it means to be a student at UK. They plan activities‚ coordinate the opening and closing of the buildings‚ recognize academic achievement‚ help encourage students to become leaders‚ enforce policies and other measures to make sure our halls are safe and much‚ much more. Here are a few things we are proud of:
Outstanding Staff – Residents have rated our staff – through a recent Educational Benchmarking Study – in the superior to excellent range for helping solve problems‚ enforcing policy‚ treating everyone fairly‚ appreciating diversity‚ being available and planning activities. This survey compares UK staff with residence hall staff from across the country.
Academic Success – The Office of Residence Life promotes activities
that pursue the academic goals and enhance the overall academic experience of our residents. We have partnered with the First Year Initiatives office to provide Academic Initiative plans for all of our residents. Some examples have included study tables, free tutoring, recognition of good grades on exams, and having professors lead study sessions for classes prior to major exams. We want the residence halls to be a place where you can study and achieve your academic goals!
Providing a “Blueprint“ – We recently implemented a brand new series – called “Blueprint“ – to provide hall-wide programs in the first six weeks of school on topics such as campus safety‚ community living‚ fire safety‚ academic support‚ alcohol education‚ and sexual health/relationships that will help you learn about college life and get off to a good start at as a member of the Wildcat community.
Student Involvement – Residence Life staff coordinate over 1500
community development activities for residence hall students each year! Some examples include the Boyd/Patterson Hall annual Haunted House‚ the Homecoming Lobby Decoration Contest‚ the South Campus Fall Festival as well as hall dinners‚ participating on intramural sports teams‚ and numerous other fun programs and activities.
Responsible Citizenship – The Office of Residence Life promotes quality programs that develop a sense of personal well-being and an awareness of civic responsibility. Residents have been involved in the downtown Lexington Urban Challenge contest‚ raising money for the Circle of Love program to buy gifts for underprivileged children‚ creating holiday cards for Shriner’s hospital‚ and donating time at the Ronald McDonald house.
Recycling Rocks! – We have a student-led recycling program that encourages residents to recycle materials in personal room containers and building wide bins. We currently recycle aluminum‚ steel‚ plastics‚ paper‚ magazines‚ ink jet cartridges‚ plastic grocery bags‚ batteries and cardboard. UK residence hall students recycle over 70‚000 lbs of material during each school year!
Residents Have a Voice – Hall Governments and the Resident Student Association (RSA)
provide leadership development opportunities and an opportunity to make decisions for students living on campus. Hall Governments plan activities for their residents and RSA plans campus-wide events‚ such as Lil’ Sibs Weekend‚ for everyone. Residents have the opportunity to attend state and regional conferences‚ as well as help plan programs for the entire UK campus.
Everyone’s Welcome – The residence halls are place where every student‚ regardless of their background‚ can feel comfortable and consider their home while at UK. The Office of Residence Life promotes opportunities for residents to interact with each other in more meaningful ways in order to foster greater respect for individual differences. Through our “OneCampus” program‚ we articulate our commitment to valuing all students and celebrating that we’re all in this together!
