assistant hall director

The Assistant Hall Director is responsible for assisting the Hall Director with the management and administrative functions of an undergraduate housing facility. The AHD assists in creating a living environment that is supportive and inclusive learning community at the University of Kentucky. They also help coordinate a wide variety of opportunities for the academic and personal growth of residence hall students.

Assistant Hall Directors are also responsible for a floor of 25-40 residents. Specific responsibilities include holding monthly floor meeting, planning cultural, social, and recreational activities and building a sense of shared community on the floor.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain regular office hours (at least five per week).
• Assist Hall Director in conducting weekly staff meetings.
• Attend regular area staff and department staff meetings.
• Coordinate administrative tasks such as RA staff scheduling, night desk scheduling and payroll.
• Develop and implement social, educational, and academic programs.
• Process requests for program funding.
• Assist the Hall Director Manager with advising the Resident Student Government within the hall or apartment complex.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Office of Residence Life.

Qualifications

All candidates must be full time students, in good academic standing, at UK or BCTC and must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 once hired. Candidates must also be in good disciplinary standing with the University. It is also recommended that candidates have at least one year of previous residence hall experience, but other types of work experience can be substituted.

Due to the dual nature of the Assistant Hall Director position, which requires both senior staff as well as RA duties, preference is often given to current Resident Advisors at the University of Kentucky. However, other relevant supervisory experiences may be substituted for the AHD position.

Contract and Salary

Assistant Hall Directors are employed on a half-time basis for the academic year (9 months) beginning approximately August 1. The annual stipend for this position is $4,250. A meal plan of $730 per semester and $50 Plus Account for laundry and vending purchases is also provided.

desk clerk

Desk Clerks staff the main desk area of a residence hall. Their role is to facilitate the promotion of a positive living and learning environment for resident students. This position requires a commitment to serve members of the university community and visitors to the residence halls. Desk Clerks primarily cover the residence hall front desk from midnight until 7:30 or 8:00 am. Some afternoon and evening hours may also be available in the residence halls and the department’s resource rooms. Desk clerks are undergraduate students and are supervised jointly by the hall director and by a student desk clerk manager.

Responsibilities and Expectations

The residence hall front desk is where many students, parents, and other visitors receive their firs impression of the residence hall and of the Office of Residence Life. Therefore, it is extremely important that desk clerks strive to make the best impression possible with all of those entering the building. Desk clerks must display a professional, attentive, friendly, helpful attitude while working. Toward that end, the following expected of desk clerks:

• Enforcing the visitation policy, which requires accurate and consistent practice of requiring picture ID from visitors and requiring that guests be escorted by their hosts at all times.
• Convey accurate information to individuals requesting assistance over the telephone or in person.
• Maintain a neat and professional atmosphere at the desk area.
• Make sure scheduled shift is covered if desk clerk is is unable to work it.
• Contact the appropriate personnel in case of a crisis or emergencies.
• Monitor the desk and lobby area for unacceptable behavior, and communicate any problems or policy violations to the hall director and building staff.
• Attend regular meetings convened by the desk clerk manager for the purpose of scheduling shifts and sharing information.
• Complete additional duties as assigned by the hall director or desk clerk manager.

Qualifications

• Must be a full time student, in good academic standing, at UK or BCTC.
• Be in good disciplinary standing with the university when hired and while employed.
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 when hired and while employed.

Hall directors supervise a staff of 5-7 Resident Advisors and an Assistant Hall Director if applicable, Hall Directors are responsible for handling the administrative functions of the residence hall with assistance provided by a full-time office assistant. The Hall Director takes the lead in creating a living environment that is supportive of the inclusive learning community at the University of Kentucky. They also help coordinate a wide variety of opportunities for the academic and personal growth of residence hall students.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate documentation of all judicial and administrative actions.

Qualifications

All candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree and be admitted for candidacy in a graduate program at the University of Kentucky. While a graduate student, Hall Directors must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. It is also recommended that candidates have at least one year of previous residence hall experience, but other types of work experience can be substituted.

resident advisor

The primary responsibility of the Resident Advisor (RA) is to help the residents have a positive residence hall experience at UK. Each RA is assigned to a floor, consisting of 25-40 residents. RA’s have numerous leadership roles, including peer counselors, educators, programmers, resource people, community builders and authority figures.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

• Holding monthly floor meetings.
• Planning intellectual, cultural, social, and recreational program activities.
• Building a sense of shared community on their floor and within the hall.

Training

RA training is a process that occurs throughout the year. Training occurs at many levels and includes:

• Orientation soon after being hired.
• Week-long intensive training in August prior to residents arrival.
• Spring training session prior to halls re-opening in January.
• Enrollment in EDP 518, commonly referred to as "RA Class," which is a three-credit hour course required for all first semester RAs.
• In-service training session.
• Work with experienced RAs.
• On-the-job training.
