Jobs in Residence Life

Residence Life hires a variety of positions for both student and full-time staff. Hiring for the positions listed below occurs at specific times each year, or on an as-needed basis (all time periods listed are approximate).

All positions will be posted on the UK Employment website in order for interested candidates to submit applications. For more specific information, look for signs posted in the residence halls or contact the Office of Residence Life at (859) 257-4784.

resident advisor

The primary responsibility of the Resident Advisor (RA) is to help the residents have a positive residence hall experience at UK. Each RA is assigned to a floor, consisting of 25-40 residents. RA’s have numerous leadership roles, including peer counselors, educators, programmers, resource people, community builders and authority figures.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Holding monthly floor meetings.
  • Planning intellectual, cultural, social, and recreational program activities.
  • Building a sense of shared community on their floor and within the hall.
  • Attending and participating in weekly staff meetings.
  • Staffing the building and the front desk on designated days.
  • Being accessible to residents and fellow staff members.

Qualifications

  • Be a full time student, in good academic standing, at UK or BCTC.
  • Be in good disciplinary standing with the university.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 when hired.
  • Have lived in a residence hall for a minimum of one semester.
  • Must be a current Sophomore or higher to qualify for a Spring Position

Training

RA training is a process that occurs throughout the year. Training occurs at many levels and includes:

  • Orientation soon after being hired.
  • Week-long intensive training in August prior to residents arrival.
  • Spring training session prior to halls re-opening in January.
  • Enrollment in EDP 518, commonly referred to as "RA Class," which is a three-credit hour course required for all first semester RAs.
  • In-service training session.
  • Work with experienced RAs.
  • On-the-job training.
