The Arts Community

Community full- now waitlisting applicants
Open to students who have declared either a major in one of the undergraduate programs offered by the College of Fine Arts or a major in English with an emphasis in creative writing, the Arts Living Learning Community is located in North Hall (residence hall). This LLC provides opportunities to engage with speakers and performers from the Lexington community, and also encourages students to participate in community outings to local art performances. In addition, students take charge of regular cabaret and open mic events in the recreational room of North Hall. Practice rooms and studio spaces for music and art students are available within the residence hall. Students will live together in North Hall as members of the Arts Living Learning Community.

“Living in the Fine Arts dorm here at UK has been a wonderful experience! I have gotten so close to some of my hall-mates through taking a class together and participating in activities we couldn’t do if it weren't for the LLC. I would highly encourage anyone to apply to the Living Learning Community and have this great experience!”

Laura & Alison“Although I didn’t think the Living Learning Community was going to live up to all it was made out to be‚ it did! I really enjoyed taking the Physics of Music class and learning about what all my fellow art students do! I am a Studio Art major‚ so music was very foreign to me and the class really helped. I love my hall-mates and all the things the LLC lets us do together!”

DSP120-010 “Discovery Improvisation Workshop”
Kevin Holm-Hudson
TR 2:00pm-3:15pm

Many of us probably have some sense of what improvisation is. Some may associate it with playing over a set of “chord changes” in jazz, or with the thrill of watching a “jam band” in action. What does it feel like to perform in a group “without a net”? What are some of the ways that improvisation functions in music of various cultures? How do performers work in such openness in a way that they work together‚ rather than compete against each other? Might group improvisation serve as a model for an alternative‚ nonhierarchical or non-competitive model of community? In this course‚ we will learn about how improvisation works in a number of cultural contexts—from Indian ragas to classical cadenzas‚ free jazz ensemble to Grateful Dead show—and we will also create improvisational music together. We will perform a number of improvisational pieces together‚ and we will write pieces to play together. Musical skill is not required—in fact‚ it is not even necessary to know how to read music or play an instrument. Everyone can learn how to make a contribution from their own talents and perspectives. The course will culminate with a public performance of our work‚ location and time to be determined. NOTE: This seminar fulfills 3 hours of the USP Humanities requirement.

Kevin Holm-Hudson is Associate Professor of Music Theory in the University of Kentucky School of Music. He is the editor of Progressive Rock Reconsidered (Routledge‚ 2002) and the author of a forthcoming book on Genesis’s album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Illinois and he has some twenty-five years of experience as an improvising performer and composer‚ including giving full-length concerts for guitar and electronic processors.
