“I was in the Explore Community and I loved it. The people in the group were some of my first friends here and they’re still some of my best friends. We didn’t just go to class together. We hung out on Sunday nights and went to Keeneland together. We’re all REALLY close now.”

Matthew Deffendall, "a native of New Orleans, I came to Kentucky via Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where I earned a B.A. in Political Science and Speech Communication and a M.A. in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Organizational Communication from the University of Alabama. While attending graduate school, I began working part-time at a local community action agency where I held various positions eventually moving to a full-time position working with the underserved and grant writing. After five years with the agency, I got married and moved to Kentucky, where for nearly five years I was the Executive Director of a non-profit organization for at-risk youth in an outlying county. Since joining the Central Advising team, I am impressed with the level of dedication and service to students. Working with students at UK is a wonderful experience and I look forward to advising my daughter in 2020."
