Global Village Community

UK has found a way to bring the diverse world a bit closer to you. This living-learning community is designed to build cross-cultural friendship and understanding. The Global Village is made up of students from the United States and many other countries. Students live together and share cultural perspectives from around the world through the experiences of daily life and specialized programs. Students interested in foreign languages‚ cultural area studies‚ overseas study and travel‚ and the various aspects of international relations‚ or those who are interested in learning about other cultures may choose to reside in Smith Hall.

The purpose of the International Program is to provide a cross-cultural experience for students interested in broadening their understanding of world issues and cultures. This concept is strengthened by the expectation that its residents actively participate in the organization and implementation of cross-cultural programming. Such an environment serves to further enhance the building of an inter-culture community. Most importantly‚ residents will find a sense of closeness‚ community and support that provides a home-away-from-home environment. This is a great way to learn about other cultures! This community will offer well a number of informal programs to help create a sense of global community on campus. This residence hall will be full of different people. You can't live here without picking up some little pieces of different cultures‚ a little foreign vocabulary‚ and being able to taste some of the best food‚ from all over the world.

As part of the Global Village experience‚ we will work to provide you with an international student roommate. We believe this will serve to further enhance your experience in this Living Learning Community. All Global Village LLC students will be required to take Dr. Berres' DSP and UK101 courses. These two classes will enhance the community experience and provide a great learning opportunity!

DSP 110-006 “Vietnam: The Interplay of War and Culture”
Dr. Peter Berres
T 4:00pm-6:30pm

Perhaps more than most wars‚ Vietnam was a transformative event – with the war and the opposition to it fundamentally altering the nature of American society and politics. The war in Vietnam and the so-called ‘war at home’ reflect the way in which Vietnam‚ politics and culture all played off each other and helped shape‚ and were shaped‚ by each other. It is this intersection of war and culture that will focus our study of that era.

The course will begin with a historical review of Vietnam’s long struggle for independence particularly their war with the French)‚ including the political and social conditions in Vietnam; the reasons for American involvement; the development of US policy; criticism of the war; the experience of soldiers; and finish up with the legacy of America’s quarter of century of war in Indochina. Then‚ we will focus on the principle domestic issues of the ‘60s and how they were connected with the war in Vietnam and the interplay of the war and political consciousness‚ social movements and popular culture.

We will combine our study of Vietnam‚ here and there‚ with a review of the music‚ photographs‚ films‚ and literature that both reflected the war and conditioned our perspective of the war. A special emphasis will be on understanding the war from the perspective of those who fought in it‚ which will be embellished by an in-class panel of veterans and‚ most profoundly‚ through our class project which will involve students interviewing veterans which will be filmed and presented to the Oral History Project at the University of Kentucky and the Veteran’s History Project at the Library of Congress. NOTE: This seminar fulfills 3 hours of the USP Social Sciences requirement.
