A Living Learning Peer Mentor (LLPM) will aid in facilitating student learning and academic success in one of the 13 living learning communities (LLCs) and Residential Colleges (RC's) offered on UK's campus. LLPM's Expectations are in some aspects the same across the LLP, but also allow for the unique nature of particular communities. Some of the general expectations for peer mentors include:
- Serve as a leader and role model in the community
- Maintain good judicial standing with the Office of Residence Life
- Maintain the GPA required by the LLP of interest in which applicant is applying to
- Participate in training and development activities for the position
- Communicate regularly with Residence Life staff in the building Collaborate with RA's
- Build community in the LLC
- Serve as a liaison between the partner unit(s) and the Office of Residence Life
- Direct students/residents to campus resources as needed
- Commitment for a full academic year
- Return to University of Kentucky for early move-in to participate in Peer Mentor Training and preparing for LLP early move-in
- Assist with student move-in during Welcome Week
How are LLPM's selected?
Living Learning Peer mentors (LLPM) will be selected for each living learning community by the members of the community partnership. Each community partnership includes representation from the Office of Residence Life as well as invested partners.
General Requirements:
Students interested in becoming a Living Learning Peer Mentor must exhibit the following:
- A Sophomore standing or above
- Good judicial standing with the Office of Residence Life
- No prior academic offenses
- A current or past member of the LLP in which the applicant would like to apply for
Compensation
Due to varying tasks assigned to peer mentors, compensation varies for peer mentors dependent upon the community. However, there are some general incentives to having a peer mentor position. Such as:

Agriculture Residential College Peer Mentor Job Description
The Living Learning Peer Mentor (LLPM) will aid in facilitating student learning and academic success in the AG Residential College. The LLPM is a valued and important member of the living learning program and the residence hall staff.
The LLPM will be jointly supervised by both the Residence Hall Director and the AG Program Advisor with the Office of Residence Life. The following is a list of responsibilities that you are agreeing to take on in the event that you become an AG Residential College peer mentor:
- Work as part of a Living Learning team and Residence Hall staff team to support the living learning community.
- Attend various training sessions the semester prior to employment and throughout the year in order to fulfill my responsibilities as an LLPM.
- Participate in Induction & Closing Ceremonies each semester for LLC students.
- Meet all expectations set by the Hall Director and AG Program Advisor with the Office of Residence Life including:
- Move in early and assist residence hall staff with move in and LLP needs
- Assisting RA with one program related to the LLC each semester (assigned at beginning of semester)
- Create and facilitate at least two programs of your own for the LLC students (can be in collaboration with other mentors)
- Maintain a monthly bulletin board with relevant tips/interests for AG students.
- Be a resource and visible to LLC students in the residence hall
- Attend and participate in monthly meetings
- Completing other duties as assigned (i.e. door decs, recruitment efforts, etc.)
- Maintain a professional demeanor, optimistic attitude and a serve as a positive role model, which includes, but is not limited to, being on time and prepared for all LLC related commitments; dressing appropriately during all events and meetings; meeting deadlines; managing personal/professional time; using appropriate language and humor; and checking and responding to email in a timely fashion.
- Maintain confidentiality when in communication with students and share information only with the appropriate individuals within the department.
- Serve as a positive role model and abide by all UK & Office of Residence Life policies and procedures.
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative G.P.A
Compensation
Compensation for this role will come in the form of a $500 stipend. The payment will be divided up, in which you will receive a $250 one-time payment in the beginning of the semester and another one-time $250 payment at the end of the semester. The last payment will be contingent upon you completing your LLPM duties (listed above) throughout the semester.
A&S Wired Residential College Peer Mentor Job Description
The A&S Wired Residential College Living Learning Program promotes positive interactions between upper-class students and freshmen entering UK fall 2012 and living in Keeneland Hall as part of Wired. To further this goal, we invite students who are currently living in Keeneland Hall and who plan to live in this hall next year to apply for a Residential Fellow position in the A&S Wired program.
Fellows will design academic activities for assigned floor residents in order to create a sense of community and to develop relationships as active members of their floors. They will encourage residents to use a variety of academic resources, work to increase student and faculty interactions, and promote attendance at a variety of events held in Keeneland and at UK each year. In this vein, they will complement Resident Hall Advisors’ guidance, though they will not have disciplinary or floor responsibilities. Rather, Fellows will collaborate with the resident hall staff to better enable students to succeed in their transition to college.
Each Fellow will be assigned approximately ten students to mentor. They will be housed on the same floor as mentees. Residential Fellows will be required to work five hours a week, in exchange for which they will receive a $300 award for the fall and for the spring semesters. Additionally, those who did not receive an iPad last year will be given the same device distributed to 2012 A&S Wired Residential College freshmen. Because the program integrates technology, coursework, and community (in part via the iPad), Fellows will be called on to use the iPad in their programming and interactions with students.
Qualifications:
- Achieved sophomore standing or the equivalent of two semesters of academic work and be enrolled in classes during the academic year 2012-2013 at UK.
- A Cumulative 3.0 minimum GPA must be achieved by the end of the spring 2012 semester and maintained throughout fall 2012 and spring 2013.
Responsibilities include:
Actively participate in a leadership course, A&S 100: Leadership Development. This is a one-credit hour seminar (meeting time TBA but will meet once a week) offered during the fall and spring semesters. Requirements include:
- Attend Move-In day, LLP Induction Ceremony, iPad distribution, and weekly meetings with RA and with Wired Coordinators (Leah Bayens/Marlea Gwinn) and closing ceremonies.
- Attend training programs prior to employment and throughout the year as needed.
- Maintain weekly contact with peers in the form of study groups, office hours held in Keeneland meeting rooms, lobby area, etc.; email; Facebook and other forms of social media contact, hand-written invitations to events, etc.
- Weekly contact in planning academic tutoring sessions or walking with a group to those sessions; advertising in-hall tutoring such as workshops from the Writing Center, time management meetings, etc.
- Attend Coffee Chats and other planned Wired activities along with your floor group.
- Administrative functions such as record-keeping and posting notices, announcements, and entries on the website page and Facebook
- Evaluate events, programs and guest speakers.
- Plan and coordinate second year activities for the second-year A&S Wired students who began as freshmen in the fall 2011 and remain at UK.
- Submit programming ideas to the A&S Wired Student Committee and encourage mentees to do the same thing.
- Maintain an optimistic attitude and serve as a positive role model, which includes, but is not limited to, being on time and prepared for all A&S Wired and Keeneland Hall related commitments, meeting deadlines, managing time, using appropriate language and humor, and checking/ responding to email in a timely fashion.
- Maintain good judicial standing with the Office of Residence Life.
- Communicate regularly with Resident Assistants and A&S Wired Coordinators.
- Work as part of the living learning team and residential hall staff team.

The Living Learning Peer Mentor (LLPM) will aid in facilitating student learning and academic success in the 1G LLC. The LLPM is a valued and important member of our living learning program and the residence hall staff.
The LLPM will be jointly supervised by both the Residence Hall Director and the First Generation Program Advisor with the Office of Residence Life. The following is a list of responsibilities that you are agreeing to take on in the event that you become a 1G LLC peer mentor.

The SEAM Living Learning Community Peer Mentor Job Description
Each year, 24 students in the SEAM program live and take part in the SEAM living learning community (LLC) in Ingels Hall. The LLC is designed to complement the SEAM academic program by providing students (1) a residence in which like-minded students can live together, supporting one another throughout their academic and college experiences; (2) a space to engage in lively and pertinent dialogue related to the SEAM program; and (3) programs and opportunities that will enhance their overall UK and SEAM experience.
Expectations of Peer Mentors across the Living Learning Programs
- Serve as a leader and role model in the community;
- Maintain good judicial standing with the Office of Residence Life;
- Participate in training and development as outlined by each community partnership;
- Communicate regularly with Residence Life staff in the building;
- Collaborate with RA's and other partners to build community in the LLC;
- Serve as a liaison between the partner unit(s) and the Office of Residence Life;
- Plan and execute at least one program per month for the community, related to the community focus;
- Direct students/residents to campus resources as needed;
- Assist with one recruiting event (Preview Night, Come See for Yourself event, etc.) per semester representing the Living Learning Program;
- Serve as part of the LLP partnership group for their respective communities.
Additional SEAM Objectives and Expectations for the Peer Mentor
The purpose of Peer Mentors in the SEAM Living Learning Community is three-fold in nature. First, the peer mentor will help in the planning and development of programs for the LLC. Second, the peer mentor will serve as a resource and support for the first-year students in the SEAM LLC. Finally, the program is designed to help build and strengthen the leadership and professional skills of the peer mentor, providing them the opportunity to grow in their own leadership experiences. Specific expectations of the peer mentor are outlined in more detail below:
- Help facilitate and encourage participation in SEAM and other Gatton College/College of Engineering programs and events (i.e. Coffee Talks, Site Visits, Social Hours, etc.);
- Assist in the organizing of SEAM-related service/outreach events each semester;
- Assist in the mentoring for residents to help them adjust to the SEAM program and UK culture as a whole;
- Meet with the SEAM Advisors bi-weekly throughout the year to discuss upcoming events, challenges and successes of the program.
Peer Mentor Selection
The SEAM Peer Mentor will be selected each year by the two SEAM Advisors in partnership with the Office of Residence Life. Currently, one Mentor will be selected for each academic year for the SEAM LLC. However, two may be selected when deemed necessary by the SEAM Advisors and in partnership with Residence Life. Peer Mentors for the SEAM Living-Learning Community must be a part of the SEAM program. SEAM Peer Mentors should also:
- Maintain a minimum 3.4 cumulative grade point average;
- Have sophomore standing or above;
- Be in good judicial standing with the Office of Residence Life.
Compensation
Pending acceptable performance according to this contract, the SEAM Peer Mentor will receive a $550 stipend per semester. Additionally, the Peer Mentor will have access to programming funds through the annual SEAM budget and will work with the SEAM Advisors when funds are needed.
