Green Dot Influencer Reception at the King Alumni House

Green Dot Influencer Reception at the King Alumni HouseOn Thursday, October 22, The VIP Center hosted a special event for students of influence on campus. It was designed to provide key social leaders with information and materials in order to recruit friends in their sphere of influence to the next SEEDS Bystander training on Sunday, November 8. The participants were nominated through a survey done with UK faculty, staff, and fellow students. About 30 influential students on campus came out to this exciting event to hear Dr. Dorothy Edwards speak and consider the legacy they want to leave during their time at UK. The strategy is based on research that tells us change happens most effectively on campuses when there is "buy-in" from key social leaders. In fact, the success of our violence prevention efforts at UK depends on this. The enthusiasm from those that attended was impressive. Everyone is looking forward to a successful SEEDS event in November that will further the Green Dot movement to measurably reduce violence on our campus.

Popular Author James McBride Shares His Insights at UK

Author James McBride (center) visits with the "The Color of Water" leadership teamIt was James McBride's poignant childhood search for racial identity and a deeper understanding of his mother, himself, his family and the world around him, that convinced the University of Kentucky to chose his book "The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother" as the text for its first Common Reading Experience.

A collaborative effort between the Office of New Student and Parent Programs in the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of the Provost, the Common Reading Experience program using McBride's book was designed to introduce new students to academic life at UK this fall. The goal was to bring new students together before they even step foot on campus. All incoming freshmen were required to read the same book with the goal of sharing their impressions in a casually structured academic setting prior to the start of classes. A second goal was to engage the entire UK community in a common intellectual experience.
