Dining Services Extend Hours of Operation
The University of Kentucky Dining Services has recently extended their hours of service until midnight Sunday through Thursday at the Commons, Commons Starbucks®, Ovid's Café and Ovid's Starbucks.
The change came as a result of a conversation President Eli Capilouto had with students representing Student Government Association, Global Scholars Program and Emerging Leaders Institute. Several of the students pointed out that campus dining options were rather restrictive late at night, especially those near the south campus residence halls. By providing these extended hours, the Dining Services will provide a safe location for students to socialize and study while they enjoy the campus cuisine. All four locations will accept cash, credit, Flex Dollars and Plus Account.
The staff of the Office of Residence Life recently met to discuss disaster and emergency preparedness in the residence halls and on campus. The staff is continually working to improve safety and security measures that will ensure the well-being of the students who live in our halls. An effective response to any emergency starts with planning sessions such as those conducted regularly in Residence Life.
This year's Carol S. Adelstein Outstanding Student Award was recently presented to Veronica Umeasiegbu, a doctoral student in the College of Education.
The Adelstein Award is named for the wife of former UK English professor Michael Adelstein, the late Carol S. Adelstein, who used a wheelchair because of polio and was an inspiration to persons with disabilities by leading a meaningful, successful life at a time when individuals with disabilities were not encouraged to be independent, contributing members of society. The Adelstein Award is given by the [UK Disability Resource Center] to students with disabilities who are inspirations to others on and off campus through excellence in academic achievement, leadership, extracurricular activities, and social and personal qualities.
Umeasiegbu is working on her doctorate in the [College of Education Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling]. Her short term goals include doing research that will add meaningfully to improvement of the quality of life for people with disabilities.
There is Panda-monium in the Student Center!
Panda-monium has set in at the Student Center as Kentucky's first Panda Express restaurant is now officially open. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were recently held in the restaurant on the first floor of the University of Kentucky Student Center, next to the Cats Den. Speakers included UK Provost Kumble Subbaswamy and Vice President of Student Affairs Robert Mock. Special guests included the Panda and UK mascots.
Several representatives of Panda Express corporate headquarters have been at the UK restaurant, familiarizing the UK Dining Services crew with the Panda way of preparing healthy, gourmet stir fried meals fast. Among those was Jenny Yau of the Panda Express Licensing division. "Colleges students across the country love Panda Express, and Panda Express loves them as well. We continue to seek opportunities to serve more students every year, and UK is our best opportunity to serve more students as well as the people of Kentucky. We are honored to partner with UK Dining Services to open the first Panda Express in Kentucky and to become UK students' gourmet Chinese option on campus," said Yau as she relaxed for a moment after the UK Panda Express team served more than 500 hungry members of the campus community in a special two-hour pre-opening event.

Mental Health Screening Day 2011
On Wednesday, February 23, the Counseling Center, College of Medicine, College of Social Work, and Student Wellness Ambassadors hosted a Screening Day in the William T. Young Library. The free screening identified symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through a brief paper and pencil survey. A total of 119 students, staff, faculty, and community members were screened at the event. People who stopped to take the survey were given feedback about their scores by psychologists from the Counseling Center and staff and residents from the College of Medicine. In addition, they were provided with mental health resources on campus and in the community, as well as information about Counseling Center services and mental health issues.
The spring Screening Day event was part of the Mid-Winter Suicide Prevention Week, which also included presentations on suicide prevention by Vince Silenzio, M.D. of University of Rochester and David Hanna, Ph.D., past president of the Kentucky Psychological Association.
