Student Tax Office

You received a form because higher education costs may be eligible for federal tax benefits. Our records show that you were enrolled in courses at the university which were billed for in the calendar year. Additional information regarding the purpose can be found on the 1098-T form.

You received a form because higher education costs may be eligible for federal tax benefits. Whether you may take advantage of these tax credits depends upon your individual facts and circumstances - information which is known only to you. To find out more about the credits and your eligibility, you may consult a tax professional or IRS publications. You may also call 1-800-TAX-FORM for IRS publications and forms, or visit their website www.irs.gov.

Forms will be mailed to the student’s permanent address by January 31. Please allow 2 weeks for delivery.

Payment deadlines are established either according to state law, or to University guidelines which promote efficient and effective operations. The December payment deadline allows academic departments adequate time to plan for the Spring semester and evaluate the need for additional courses and teaching staff. Therefore, the deadline cannot be extended to January.

In certain situations, a 1098-T may not have been generated for you:

Your Student ID may start with a "000", "880" or "999" , which are not valid SSN's. We cannot report information to the IRS if we do not have a valid SSN.

To change the SSN for the 1098-T, the student must contact the Registrar's Office to have your SSN changed in the computer system. Once this has been completed, contact the Student Tax Office and a 1098-T will be generated.

If these situations do not apply, a 1098-T should have been generated and mailed to the student's permanent address. If you do not receive the 1098-T form, contact Student Tax Office at (859) 257-6702.

When reviewing your records please take into consideration actual payment dates in order to reconcile your records to the amounts on the form. The 1098-T form reflects payments and refunds made in the calendar year. Payments made in previous or future years are not included.

The 1098-T form reflects total tuition and fee charges, not just items paid by you individually. Therefore, the statement may include amounts paid by financial aid, tuition waivers, exemptions, etc.

This information is supplied by that office. If you would like more information regarding the amount paid, please call (859) 257-1215.

To change the SSN on the 1098-T, the student must contact the Registrar's Office to have your social security number changed in the computer system. Once this has been completed, contact the Student Tax Office and a new 1098-T will be generated.

Beginning in 2007 the IRS has required that Boxes 3 and 5 be filled in when applicable.

Box 3 represents reductions to tuition and fees for an academic term in 2006 (or the first academic term in 2007 if billed for in 2006) which occurred in the calendar year 2007. So, if a student advance registered for the Spring 2007 term, those charges would have been billed for in 2006 and appeared on the 2006 1098-T. If the student subsequently dropped a class in January 2007 and the tuition and fees for the term were reduced, the amount of the reduction would appear in Box 3.

Box 5 works much the same way, but for scholarships and grants. Any reduction to a scholarship or grant that occurred in 2007 for an academic term in 2006 would appear in Box 5.

The university cannot provide tax advice. More information regarding these adjustments can be found in the instructions for Form 8863 or by consulting a tax professional.
