At lunch on the Friday before leaving for this tournament, misgivings were expressed about how much fun could be had at it; after all, it would be an inaugural effort, it would be Modified NQT (at which the UKAT seems to do well, though it does not give the same pleasure as ACF), the field would be quite small, and many of the packets would be written by a young Depauw team. Sadly, many of these misgivings turned out to be realized; while many of the submitted packets were good, as were the playoff packets, several of the question sets were just dreadful, and the moderating corps seems to have been largely unfamiliar with game procedures. The "A" team of Kelly, Seth, Robert, and Steven Gayhart ended up with second place, and the "B" team, ably led by Neal with help from Steven Richardson, Christopher, and Lou, finished third; congratulations to Iowa, who won, and we hope DePauw has better success with future tournaments.
NOTE: Stats compiled from the Depauw's website.

In a conversation which took place among the UKAT in the moments before the start of the tournament it was resolved that, NQT being what it is and the team being what it is, no one be surprised by anything that happened in the course of the tournament itself. Hence, it was unsurprising that the packets weren't done, and the last two rounds were read as twenty untimed tossups; that the questions were largely written by the Michigan team and that those questions were generally good; that the team defeated Illinois A and Chicago A but lost by 10 points to Chicago B; that despite finishing with the same record (12-1) as the latter and crushing them in points-per-question, the tournament was decided on head-to-head and the team was accorded second place; that Kelly was awarded third place in scoring before the last game, whose stats probably would have elevated him to second; and that no trophies were given out for these achievements. Also unsurprising is the fact that the team had a good time; highlights other than those mentioned above were the discussion of AC theory on the way up; Blaaaatch (don't ask); lima beans, tomatoes and cauliflowers; and the Chump Jump; lowlights include the binder clamp incident.

In a moment between games a player from Florida asked Seth why the UKAT came to NQT events, seeing as how we obviously do not dig the whole format and basically hate every second of playing in it. Indeed, from the opening minutes of the car-ride down to Chattanooga the team had more-or-less resigned itself to having a wretched time, and there was much in the "packs" (lack of non-English literature, overflow of Shakespeare, overwhelming paucity of myth and Art, and a liquid brown squirt of trash stinking up each game) [Don't forget the steaming brown pile of January 2001 current events. -Ed.] to ensure that very thing. With two losses incurred in the round-robin (and a third which had been resulted from a faulty game tabulation and was credited to the team without its knowledge, though this would later be overturned in an exceedingly civil and fair manner), and the prospect of winning it remote, this year's Sectionals looked like another titanic waste of time.

As it turns out, however, this tournament turned out to be perhaps the most fun of any the team had ever played; there was the whole winning it (as it turns out, all the classics had been herded into the playoff "pack", on which the team played against and defeated Florida for the win), but that was almost secondary to hanging out with South Carolina (misery loves company) and being graced with the presence of the delightful Julie Singer, whose company (especially at lunch) made the tournament for us. Other highlights include Robert's inspired [And incredibly ass-wrong... -Ed.] answer
"Uncle Jemima's Mash Liquor" (the correct answer was "azeotrope"); the team's individual ppg (43 for Kelly, 40 for Seth, 35 for Robert); the Duke game; Raj Duwhalia's guess of "NAMBLA" [That's the North American Man/Boy Love Association for the uninformed. -Ed.] for "The Shriners"; and Neal and Richardson's excellent play; lowlights (other than the horrible distribution of the "packs") include more of Mase; "unfortunately"; the presence of a certain someone; the "Malevolent Presence"; the lack of individual accolades for Kelly; and not taking Singer up on her offer to ditch the tournament and go to Lookout Mountain with her. So, we had a great time.

PS: Thanks for hanging with us, Julie. Seriously, though, don't retire; the Southern circuit needs you.

NQT Nationals at Washington University in St. Louis
Player Games Power Tossups Tossups Interrupts TU/I Total Pts.
Kelly 15 22 51 18 4.06 750
Seth 15 15 44 6 9.83 635
Robert 15 5 35 9 4.44 380

Having come to recognize what it will be getting when it chooses to play NQT, and fortified by the attitude that anything can happen in NQT and that play in this format reflects nothing about the skills of the team, the UKAT played loose and relaxed at Nationals and managed to shamble into eighth place overall. For the most part the team had a good time at the tournament, thanks largely to the efficient staff, friendly teams, and pleasant weather. Highlights include decent personal performances (like it matters), “sightseeing” during the Princeton, Oxford, and Williams games; excellent moderating, and top-notch hosting on the part of WUStL; lowlights include the Alexander III Bridge mess, the “John Malkovich” room, the “Neopolitan Milkshake”, and the damned interminable St. Louis news spot.

Robert adds: Seth, you forgot our highlight from the gas station in the middle of nowhere. Picture this: a hearse, emblazoned with "Praise the Lord" across the top of the windshield, two Confederate battle flag vanity license plates on its front bumper, being driven by an African-American. It gave us quite a chuckle.
