On some weekend way back in January, Chad, Kelly, Robert and Jeb were joined by honorary team member Rose in our yearly endeavor to finish second at Michigan’s NQT-style MLK tournament. After a night of hard drinking during which we nevertheless failed to draw uncomfortable confessions out of Robert, the team one-upped previous MLK efforts by dropping a round robin game to Michigan, thus ensuring our ouster in the semifinals by Chicago and an even worse finish than years past. However, the outstanding editing job by Adam Kemezis and company resulted in what was undoubtedly the best set of MLK questions we’ve heard, making the trip an overwhelmingly positive experience. And special thanks to the Michigan powers that be for their thoughtfulness and sagacity in emphasizing the spirit of collegiate eligibility rules in granting an exemption to Rose, who impressed us all with her fine play.
On a sad note, it seems that going out of our way to get Jeb into a match was not deemed to be enough by him, forcing Chad to kick his ass when Jeb got all up in his business. Needless to say, Jeb will not be a part of the UKAT in the future.

Though their best-laid plans had been dashed to bits time and time again, nothing could stop Gerald and Chad from going to their beloved NQT. So, by the benevolence of Barbara Burch, tournament director (many thanks for a great time), the dynamic duo found themselves at a closed sectional for the KCQRL. Emerging 6-2 from the round robin (suffering agonizing 15-point losses to Murray State and Pikeville), the playoffs (a round robin among the top four teams) featured another 15-point loss to Pikeville and a neg-barbed whipping by tournament victors Georgetown A (congratulations to both teams). UK thus slid into yet another third place finish. Lowlights for this tournament are hard to find; a thick film of current events and a hideous oft-repeated chant will have to do. Some highlights: record-setting stats for both our heroes (including an MVP award for Chad), the overall coolness of the tournament and its officials, getting to meet a cluster of new and exciting quizbowlers (with a surprisingly high hot girl density), and a portent of renewed cooperation with local schools in the future.
