There is much to say about this tournament. Though currently it is getting blasted on the QB mailing list for being too hard, particularly the bonuses, the UKAT isn't particularly upset about it. Difficult questions build better players afterall. Anyway, the A team of Kelly and Robert managed to win 1st place, incurring a single protested loss due to, in my opinion, a bad question/bad ruling combo. Oh well. Kelly was the leading tournament scorer, while Robert finished 4th for his first upper division all-star award (Each recipient got to choose a book as a prize). Our B and C teams gained a lot of experience and confidence as well. We had a feeling that Thomas would bust out the whippin' stick and he did not disappoint in his first UKAT tournament appearance. The usual consistency of Neal, Lou and the rest of the gang kept our B and C teams competitive, as they managed to upset the A teams from Georgia and Auburn, respectively. Overall a good tournament, if a bit difficult for inexperienced players and slightly off-balance in subject matter. Highlights include the victory and all-star awards (duh), the B/C team upsets, a fierce right-wing politics debate in Neal's car, visiting Seth Kendall and lodging eight people at Mr. and Mrs. Kendall's house, and stopping at Nervous Charlie's Gas Station and Fireworks. Lowlights: one miniscule A Team loss, a cramped car ride for five of us, and waiting in line forever at Wendy's for lunch.

In what has to be one of the lamest tournaments ever held, we fielded two teams in the NQT Big Ten conference tournament, as opposed to the SEC tournament in Florida, due to the lax rules regarding conference affiliation. Anyway, this tournament sucked like most NQT events, but managed to trump all previous events due to the worst questions you can imagine. Grab a copy of the first round questions if you have the chance and look at them - you'll see what we mean. Given our bias to ACF, we usually don't match our ACF successes. Div I finished 9-4, taking sixth(?) place, while Div II went 8-5 and got third place in their bracket. This appears to be the last NQT event we attend, given that ACF costs less, provides better questions, and is more fun. Kelly finished 4th in scoring but got no recognition (lame). Stuff that happened on the trip: passing a convoy including a tank, Lou getting lost from Neal at a gas station (heh, Lou-ser), Lou nearly running out of gas while Neal's lead car was oblivious to his flashing lights, and some whacked-out navigation in Champaign-Urbana that took us out to a John Deere shop in the middle of nowhere as opposed to the UIUC campus.

University of Michigan MLK Tournament

Kelly 14 - 85 20 4.25 750
Thomas 14 - 23 3 7.67 215
Michael 14 - 17 5 3.40 145
Neal 14 - 10 1 10.00 95

The UKAT competed in Michigan's 2000 MLK tournament, and despite the field of 27 teams (the strongest we've played in this year) and the NQT/ACF hybrid format, the team managed to finish in a tie for 6th place. The tournament was excellently run, and the questions were good, despite the sickening abundance of African current events (or, more accurately, African capitals speed races). Highlights include a thrilling game of Inquisition, the positive response to our packet, and (obviously) the team's strong performance. Among the lowlights were the abyssmal Ann Arbor campus, which seems to be bereft of all known forms of dining, and the fact that only four all-stars were recognized despite the presence of such a huge field. Overall, a positive experience.

It's probably fortunate for NQT that NQT-written tournaments are spaced out just enough so that the UKAT forgets its oath to not put themselves through the frustration of hearing round after round of crapademia and insignificant current events. Kelly and Neal braved Div I as a two player team, and pulled out a fourth place finish on questions decidedly not to their liking. The Div II team of Thomas, Michael, and Kim performed quite well on what turned out to be high school questions, placing (I believe) third. Highlights include "LAHORE!!", a Chilean question-smithy bonus appearing at just the right time, and all-star awards for Kelly and Thomas. Lowlights (and there always are some) include the 1-4 start for the A team, an error in stats which led Kelly to be credited with 68 interrupts, and that darn A missing from a certain acronym.
