Despite a single sloppy loss to Michigan the team of Kelly, Robert, and Seth emerged victorious at CMU's E-BOWL A, capping what was pretty much an overwhelmingly positive experience made so primarily by the well-written, straightforward, canonical questions written by Eric Steinhauser. With the tournament itself the UKAT has few complaints - specifically, the playoff system, the weird history questions, and the heretical practice of awarding less than four all-stars, thus depriving Kelly of a deserved accolade), reserving most of its spite for the city of Pittsburgh itself, whose confusing streets and depressing appearance is not redeemed even by the presence of Le Magnifique (Mario Lemieux). Still, we enjoyed ourselves; if the same sort of event happens next year, we'd go.

The UKAT was able to field three full teams for this year's COTKU, thus ensuring that 12 people would suffer through what may have been the worst questions ever written for an ACF tournament (no offense meant for Charlie Steinhice and Ben Lea, who certainly were not responsible for this excrement). The A team of Kim, Seth, Robert, and Kelly managed to make it to the finals, where they were whipped by the ever-excellent Florida Atlantic team (who could have and deserved to have beaten us on questions more worthy of them), while the B team of Megan, Rebecca, Christy and Rob finished 3-5 and the C team finished 7-1, good for a playoff run which was stopped at the semifinal level, admirable performances by both teams considering that this event was the début tournament for 7 of the 8 Division II players. Lowlights are too numerous to mention, and while tournament highlights themselves include an all-star for Kelly and C team bulwark Christopher Manker, by far the best part of the trip was getting to hang out with the really neat new recruits for the team, whose company made the expedition worthwhile. In sum, we managed to have a good time, and good things are presaged for the future.

Forced, because of the cramped cabin of the Ramshacklemobile, to field a team consisting only of Kelly and Seth, the UKAT (playing as "Unexpected Gunplay", because, dammit, Unexpected Gunplay is funny) competed in one of the single best tournaments ever, which, after thirteen rounds of play, resulted in victory for the team. Highlights are abundant and would include the outstanding question quality, excellent logistics, well-maintained stats, pretty good reading, and the great performance of Kelly and decent performance of Seth, whose respective 70 and 54 ppg earned them second and third individual honors (though Kelly would end up leading the tournament after interbracket play, having actually increased his average 72 ppg, all-stars were determined after round-robin), but by far the best part of it was the narrow victory over Michigan and getting to hang out with them during and subsequent to the team tournament. The only real lowlights were two bad rounds against Vicich's Illinois team and Carleton, requiring a last tossup victory, and Seth's nearly zeroing a Jewish Holidays bonus whose mercy 10 points sealed the win. What a great, great tournament; Washington University deserves all the praise it's gotten and more for this almost perfect event.

After the SLO III Seth and Kelly stayed for the TADD Bowl, in which Kelly gunned opponents down like a lunatic drunken Irish Postal Employee and won the whole affair, while Seth embarrassed himself and shambled into fifth place. Almost better than that, though, were the hardcore ACF conversations with the Michigan people over beer bought from a place called "Schnuck's" (I kid you not). All in all, a good time; yeah.

In what was an almost complete mirror opposite of the last UTC tournament, the UKAT once again managed to field three more-or-less complete teams for the MidSouth ACF Fall tournament to play on questions which were, on the whole, excellent, due to the painstaking editorial work of our own Kelly McKenzie, who, as the Wildcat showed, knows how ACF is supposed to be. The Division II teams consisting of Nathan, Todd, and Christy (B) on the one hand and Megan, Rebecca, Rob, and Will (C) on the other achieved a fair amount of success, with a total of 45 points preventing the B team from having a .500 record, having lost 3 games on tiebreaker; meanwhile, the A team, deprived of the services of its main tossup monster, made the most of diminished fortunes and pulled off the win, even though, in our defense, we tried desperately to drop that round robin game to South Carolina. Due to an enlightened decision on Charlie's part to award 7 all-stars per division, Todd, Nathan and Will were all decorated for Division II, while Robert emerged as third all-star and Seth (proving again that age and treachery surmount youth and skill) was named MVP of Division I. Lowlights from this tournament were very few and would include the diminished strength of the field, the horrible performance in the USC game, a dreadful 13-5 Wangfest, the B team's narrow losses, and waaaaaaay too much consumption of potent potables the night before; highlights, however, abound, and include the B team's almost wins, Robert's 12-1 scoring rampage against the C team (they might not see that as that much of a highlight, though), renewing our rivalry with the excellent South Carolina team, meeting with UTK's lone gunman Patrick Riser, who we look forward to see becoming a terror of the Southern circuit.

As a brief aside: anyone who found fault with Kelly's ACF fall questions needs to have his head examined. These questions were outstanding, well written, and extremely accessible; if this is the turn ACF is taking, then the Golden Age is returning. Congratulations and thanks are the very least that should be offered to the editor, whose hours and hours of work paid off with must be considered an absolute jewel of a tournament. Thank you, Kelly; that tournament was superb.

For UTC's annual tournament for 1st and 2nd year players, we send an all-freshman out on their own for the first time ever. Because no one with tournament summary experience was along for the ride, you get it in list form: Will greeting his friend on the MTSU team by saying "God hates you," Rob's "Opera" answer, Will's comment about "That guy who played Don Knotts" on the Andy Griffith Show, Kimwipes replacing Will as the object of mockery, and a tantalizing offer on Seth's head.

Variety being the spice of life, this year the UKAT elected to venture out of our traditional Southern home of UTC to give the Midwest Regionals a try, where the increased field strength, while more satisfying to the purists among us, nevertheless prevented our securing a second Regionals title (congratulations to the Chicago crew for the win). As it happened, our A and B teams ended the day placing third and fifteenth, respectively. Highlights include Kelly's all-star, our gradual improvement as the day went on, and close games against Chicago and Michigan, while lowlights include lackluster personal performances from Seth and Robert, the diminished fortunes of our B team, and some intra-team squabbling that may have done much to influence our first few rounds of poor play.

After the tournament, Kelly, Richardson, and Seth stayed behind to play at the SOB singles tournament, where Kelly earned another singles title, while Richardson and Seth placed twelfth and fourteenth. Congratulations to Kelly for the impressive performance.

Wildcat Invitational Tournament 2: A Cavalcade of Whimsy, Team "A"

Seth 7 57 7 8.14 77.14

This year's Wildcat Invitational tournament can only be described as another triumph for the one-man question craftsman Kelly McKenzie, whose packets demonstrate again his thorough mastery of the subtleties involved in creating pure academic, challenging, and accessible ACF rounds. Allowed to play on them again this year, Seth managed to eke out fifth place amidst a much stronger field than the previous year's event (congratulations to a dominant Michigan team for its second win) and was the tournament's leading scorer, relying on experience, dirty tricks, and voodoo to prevent Matt Lafer, The Future of Quizbowl®, from taking that honor (though he did yield his prize selection to Lafer, who actually selected a book Seth supplied to the team as a prize). Highlights include the packets, the collection of excellent players from all over the country, and the decent play which picked up after lunch.

Omar Bongo Academic Tournament at Pittsburgh, Team B
Player Games Tossups Interrupts TU/I PPG
Kelly 10 81 18 4.50 72.00

For a variety of reasons, this was most definitely not our best tournament, dividing our manpower between two teams which finished 4th and 5th in the finals standings. Kelly's 72 ppg earned him the MVP award, while Robert and Seth tied for fifth place on the all-star roster. Oh, well.

ACF Nationals at Maryland / George Washington University

Robert 8 21 2 10.50 25.00
Richardson 8 1 0 -- 1.25

After a breathtaking display of incompetence from the UKAT at the previous tournament, the best-of-the best that was ACF Nationals was a cool, nourishing summer rain which restored our spirits and revitalized our play. Almost everthing about this tournament was perfect, from the questions (which were the best Nationals questions possibly ever) to the moderating (which was excellent) to the competition, which was even better than can be desired. On the whole, an overwhelmingly positive experience which would have been better, of course, if we had won (congratulations to the Michigan team for their thorough beating of the field for the win); highlights include the second place finish, the Princeton game, Kelly's fourth-place all-star, the do-rags Robert (Rising Sun) and Kelly (Classic Red) insisted on wearing, and extended thoughts of Kelly getting his ass kicked by truckers, while lowlights include the one horrible packet that managed to sneak through, an egregious wangfest against Rutgers, and that bastard of a cop in West Virginia who gave Kelly a ticket for going five miles over the speed limit (here's hoping you get eaten alive by weasels, you pathetic waste of life).

Christy 12 4 1 4.00 2.92

Having apparently not learned their lesson from their awful showing at Pittsburgh, the elders again decided to split up along the same lines for this year's Moon Pie. This time, however, the results were more to our liking: victimised by J.P. Lien's crew in the semi-final match and finally losing to them in the shootout, the putative "B" team (Kelly) finished third, while in the finals the so-called "A" team, after losing to that selfsame Illinois A team in the final match, subjected them to Tabletime in the shootout and emerged with the win; in the meantime, the B-team followed Nathan's erstwhile scoring leadership to a respectable sixth place finish with a 7-5 record. Highlights (in addition to the win) include the typical UTC flawless logistics and well-maintained stats, hanging out with the girls on the B team, seeing Don Windham in the God-damned Bookstore, Richardson's burst of offense after a taunt by Raj Dhuwalia, and all-stars awarded to MVP Kelly, Seth (4th place), and Bob (5th place) in Division I and to Nathan in Division II; lowlights included Kelly's concentration-shattering game against Florida Community College Jacksonville, the "A" team's miserable game against Illinois B (which included the worst tossup in the tournament - and possibly the worst in the history of time - on "the poke in the eye with a sharp stick", as well as Seth's only two interrupts), and that film crew's insistence on rolling the camera around while the tossups were read (though they were nice enough to stop when asked). Again, a positive experience, and a great way to end the year's campaign.
