Well, for this year's Georgia Tech-hosted season opener it seems that that unlucky program had opted out of writing the tournament themselves and had agreed instead to host an incarnation of the Early Fall Tournament. On the whole the questions were fairly solidly academic and well-written (if replete with a few bonuses slightly more difficult than its stated target audience) seems to have justified this decision. A field of six teams left enough questions for a double round-robin, and Vanderbilt's lack of defeat in either meant that a playoff could be avoided and they could claim the win; congratulations to them. Once again Seth took home a MVP awards as consolation for yet another second-place showing, but all in all a pretty decent set and fairly good hosting combined for a pleasant outing whose only real lowlight was losing by 5 to the aforementioned tournament winners in the first round robin. Oh, well.

Over its long and storied history the University of Kentucky's Academic Team has won .. dozens? of tournaments, but has always seemed to manage to lose UTC's Center of the Known Universe. 2006's incarnation proved no exception, with Seth once again dropping the ball to Vanderbilt (congratulations to them) and coming home with the MVP and second place. Also faring decently in terms of points per game was Ryan, who was accompanied by Gerald on a wild Odyssey which landed them in eighth place; maybe someday this tournament will come to us, but, as Saint Augustine said, "not yet".

It has been a remarkable thing, watching Kelly's fledgling ACF Fall become an institution and indeed one of the most well-attended tournaments of the year, especially in a Southern circuit which is not always terribly comfortable with ACF events. The 2006 incarnation featured an impressive 15 teams among which there were almost no pushovers, and against these Seth struggled and strove and finally ended up in the playoffs against Harding A, and somehow managed to avoid losing to them to take first place. In the meantime, Kalan and Ryan also braved the excellent competition and finished eleventh, although it succumbed in the end to the incredible length of the tournament and forfeited the last game. All in all the questions were fine and the reading was excellent, and even though there were a few logistical kinks the tournament was in the end a splendid affair; congratulations to Vanderbilt for a well-run event and a fine way to finish off the Fall semester.

In the opening meeting of this tournament it was discovered that only five teams ended up showing, leaving open the unpleasant possibility that each team would only get eight games. After some chicanery mostly instigated by Seth, South Florida generously agreed to split up into two teams and the result was a six-team double round-robin in which Seth finished third, having handed winning team USF A its only loss but losing to them in the seocnd round robin and twice falling to Florida State. Seth's decent numbers gave him another MVP, and on the whole the day ended up being a pretty good time; highlights revolve around hanging out with South Carolina, USF, and UTC's team at lunch, as well as USF's aforementioned generosity in spltting up (congratulations to their A team on the win).

After a long winter's nap after ACF Fall the UKAT managed to field two teams to UTC's Sword Bowl, where the B team (led by the stalwart Ryan) broke even after a double round-robin and finished with a 4-4 record, good for third place; above them, Seth was defeated twice by Vanderbilt (who won; congratulations to them) and finished in second place, gathering whatever solace was to be had from another MVP. Highlights included a fairly relaxed tournament and gossip about the Classics Department at lunch, as well as Gerald's personal best in scoring, which is as appropriate a swan song as any to conclude his career for the UKAT.

A combination of woeful lack of practice, feverish labor on the dissertation (completed the very next week), rust, and some really excellent teams did quite a number of the UKAT's representative at Regionals, which once again took the form of Seth playing solo. That number, ultimately, was 3, which is where Seth was ranked behind the unsuperable Vanderbilt (congratulations to them) and South Florida, who made the long trip and turned in a fine performance. Such is not to say that the tournament was not excellent, which it was: Seth was able to secure MVP for his pains, and other highlights include getting to hand out with friends from South Florida at lunch.

Seth's fairly uninspiring performance at ACF Regionals should have indicated to him that he was in no shape to compete at Nationals, but the relative proximity of the tournament (held in Nashville this year) and the fairly certain knowledge that this would probably be his last appearance on the National stage led him to put in an appearance anyway. The results were fairly predictable: after finishing third from the bottom in his bracket, Seth nevertheless managed to make the most of his "playoff" experience and emerged in 19th place. On the other hand, the tossups were at least much kinder to him than those at Regionals, leading to his capture of a third-place individual award (scoring trophies were given - correctly - based on numbers from the round-robin, although the stats above include playoffs). Highlights include a last-tossup loss to Maryland, a fairly close game against second-place finishers Brown, and a good-natured crushing of South Florida; all in all, not a bad time by any stretch of the imagination.

Ahh, the Moon Pie, where the usual question - "How badly will Seth lose to Vanderbilt this time?" - could not be asked, since Vanderbilt's finals are usually at this time and thus they rarely attend. Therefore, the next obvious question became "To whom will Seth then drop the ball this time?", to which the answer ultimately became "Virginia Tech", the latter having knocked him out in the playoff game to clinch the win (congratulations to them). Damn it. At any rate, neither the loss nor questions of varying shades of quality (due to the first-time editing effort of David Moore) did not mar the good time to be had, from which highlights would include a close loss to Borglum and hanging out with friends from the various Florida-based teams both during and before the tournament.
Such, then, is the conclusion of the 2006-2007 season; we'll see what happens next year.
