After a last minute cancellation left us shorthanded, Kelly, Robert, and Seth nevertheless persevered and travelled to the first tournament of the year. In fact, it was a first in many respects for the team, marking Seth's début as a member of the UKAT and Robert's first collegiate tournament ever, averaging a marvellous 19 points per game in his first outing. The team tried out its strategy at this tournament, going 6-5 by beating three of the four teams ranked ahead of us (including the ultimate victor of the tournament) and losing (in one case twice) to three teams ranked below us, for a final standing of fifth overall, second among non-masters teams.

Maryland Terrapin Invitational Tournament

Seth 12 77 2 38.50 63.33

While the rest of the team marshalled its energies for the purpose of winning KCQRL's Campbellsville tournament, Seth decided to go solo and represent the team in Baltimore at the Terrapin Invitational. As a team Seth went a lackluster 5-7, but the opportunity to play in a tournament as well-run as the Terrapin and to hang out with people as cool as the members of the Cornell team made the whole affair worthwhile.

The opportunity to both a)play at a tournament run by Carol Guthrie and b) not to have to miss any classes to do so proved irresistable to the UKAT, which managed to field two teams of a total of nine people due to the last minute addition of Nick Garland, thus increasing the Kentucky's ACF player-per-tournament average to over four people. The UKAT divided up into teams of roughly equal skill (bad idea, by the way) and unsurprisingly, both teams ended up with the somewhat disappointing record of 6-9. The real highlight of this event was the UK "Blue" team, featuring three freshmen, two of them in their tournament début, and all of whom had scoring averages between ten and twenty points per game.

ACF Regionals at Georgia Tech

Seth 12 80 5 16.00 64.58
Kelly 12 42 12 3.50 30.00
Dominick 12 20 9 2.22 12.92

A number of factors could have made this one of the worst tournaments ever for the UKAT: we were, again, shorthanded, with Dominick taking the third chair with Seth and Kelly; Seth was almost delirious from illness; and we got lost and were nearly murdered by an irate driver in Atlanta. Despite these things, it was instead one of the best tournaments we've played, losing two games to South Carolina and Auburn and defeating eventual tournament winner Georgia Tech for a 10-2 record and a third place finish.

South Carolina Gamecock Invitational I
Player Games Tossups Interrupts TU/I PPG
Seth 9 41 4 10.25 43.33
Kelly 9 23 4 5.75 23.33
Robert 9 12 3 4.00 11.67
Dominick 9 11 4 2.75 10.00

Despite the best efforts of T.C. Ford and crew to make this a fun tournament, a number of things (poor quality of the non-submitted packets, low turnout and last minute exits, etc.) took a little away from the enjoyment to be had. Nevertheless, we went undefeated for the team's only ACF win of the season (and the first collegiate win of Seth's career), and there was that Isaac Hayes bonus (which we thirtied) and the Respighi and Robert E. Howard tossups, so it was in the end an enjoyable experience.
