Transportation issues meant the team would be represented by only Kelly and Seth for this outing. Nevertheless, the dynamic duo (playing on questions that were well-written but a bit on the easy side) managed to sweep its bracket, including a last-tossup victory over South Carolina, en route to a semifinals against Georgia Tech. After a loss to Tech on the first packet, the team beat them convincingly on the second, and this win, coupled with a better record, enabled the team to play Virginia Tech for the title; to win, two victories were needed, and while the team won the first game, Virginia Tech won the second for the tournament triumph. In addition to the second-place win, both Kelly and Seth were awarded tournament all-stars (Kelly's first), in what has certainly been an auspicious start to the season; we look forward to playing Virginia Tech again in the future.

For the sojourn to Atlanta the team managed to field a full complement, with Robert and new member Jarrett playing right and left wing to Kelly and Seth. The usual travel vicissitudes aside, it was a fairly good tournament, with the team registering a good performance against excellent competition despite packets which were not especially written to our strengths (a paucity of mythology, American literature, and an overall bias towards people and events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries), incurring only one loss to Maryland, who won the tournament based on head-to-head. Despite the questionable toss-up balance, Seth still managed to pick up an all-star award. Highlights mostly revolve around Jarrett, who, in addition to his excellent début showing, also acted as chauffeur and treated the team to his music collection, which included vintage 70's and 80's hits; other highlights include the pimp (in full costume and everything) whom the team got to see plying his trade in the motel parking lot.

Robert 15 16 3 5.33 9.67
Jarrett 15 11 1 11.00 7.00

Playing in a minefield of Masters teams, including the likes of John Sheahan and Eric Hilleman, the team nevertheless managed to take third place in this event, second among non-Masters teams (just like last year). With the exception of one ridiculously hard packet and one by Vanderbilt which was not as bad, but still a little on the tough side, the questions were good (especially John Nam's), and the tournament ran smoothly; other highlights include beating Chicago on the now-infamous "woman packet" and defeating a John Sheahan-led team 310 to -5 (An unforgettable Wangfest! - Robert).

Ah, what to say about this year's MLK? Between a nauseatingly strong field including Maryland, Chicago, and a Master's team led by Windham and Dendy, Kelly and Jarrett getting sick (and Jarrett violently so), and one obscenely difficult packet and two that were just butt, we didn't so much play this tournament as survive it, coming in sixth in what was without doubt our worst performance of the year thus far. Other than the two aforementioned offenders, the packets were good (especially those of Maryland, Cornell, and South Carolina, as usual); oh, well.

The UKAT was represented by a team of all first-second year competitors at this tournament. Due to the enormity of the field and the constraints of running a one-day tournament, it was a double bracketed event settled by a single elimination playoff; thus, after going undefeated in its bracket, the team was knocked off by a team with two fewer wins and took third place with a better record than the team that took second, demonstrating, if there was ever a doubt, the patent unfairness of single-elim playoffs (though this was no fault of the director). Otherwise, the team performed excellently, presaging great things for next year, with both Jarrett and Robert finishing above 40 points per game, the latter taking home an all-star for his performance. NOTE: Due to a bracket imbalance, teams that submitted packets were given an automatic win; therefore, results show that the team went 11-0 (pre-playoffs), though only 10 games were tabulated in the personal statistics.

Kelly 15 76 18 4.22 44.67
Seth 15 68 5 13.60 43.67
Robert 15 28 4 7.00 16.33
Neal 15 4 2 2.00 2.00

An odd schedule which was the result of a misunderstanding concerning the packet submitted by South Carolina, packets which were generally well-written and well-edited but which seemed to deviate from regular ACF distribution, and several rounds of sub-par play all led to what turned out to be a very odd tournament, in which we finished second overall. Highlights include Kelly leading the team in scoring (both he and Seth got to take home all-stars, due to an enlightened decision to award six total), the UTC, Maryland, and Chicago packets, and the amusing ride home, in which we learned about the guy who "took a big hang".

Robert 8 17 4 4.25 18.75
Neal 8 6 2 3.00 6.25

Once again the team stops short of victory in Chattanooga thanks to a heartbreaking loss to Georgia Tech in the last game on questions which were a bit on the easy side of things. Highlights include the Illinois packet and Kelly's all-star award, as well as the further disintegration of Neal's aircraft-carrier sized car.

South Carolina Gamecock Invitational II

Neal 10 2 1 2.00 1.50

Between logistical problems of every kind on South Carolina's end (including a death in the family of a member of the tournament staff; please accept our condolences), occasional packet glitches, a panic attack by a member of our own team, and odd parking arrangements, South Carolina turned out to be quite an adventure again this year, with the team tying for third with Matt Colvin's masters team and Georgia Tech. Highlights (and, to be fair, there were some) included Seth's making the all-star team with a TU/I of over 28, Albert Whited and Maureen Smith's reading, and the return of Bobby Shepard to the game.

Robert 15 34 5 6.80 21.00
Sean 15 13 1 13.00 8.33

All in all a rather pleasing tournament; 5th place nationally is pretty good, no? We achieved our goal of A) doing well and B) getting some respect (only a little bit, however). Some of the bad moments revolve around poor performances on some bad packets, as well as just bad play, admittedly, by the team. Lowlights: beating Illinois B on the last TU (should not have been close), losing to Columbia (killed them in rematch), going 1-2 against Iowa, and last TU losses to Illinois A & Maryland. Highlights: shutting out a team, beating Michigan A on last TU, beating Cal-Berkeley. Another highlight: watching the all-star game, in which our own Seth Kendall participated, leading his team in scoring.
