It is a shame that NQT is not more popular among undergraduate members of the UKAT. Granted, the questions are kind of easy, but that means more intense competition, greater equality of point distribution among individuals, faster play, and (if the questions also happen to be good) more all-around fun. So, it was with a heavy heart that Chad found himself the only player going to Rolla, a beautiful town nestled in the Ozarks, to represent his institution. He expected a good time; he experienced the most enjoyable and well-run tournament of his career. The 15 untimed rounds of play began at 9:00 and were over at 5:30, and that's with an hour for lunch. Moderation was universally excellent, stats were timely and accurate, and the questions were amazingly well-written. As a team UK went 9-5, good for fourth place, and as an individual Chad finished second behind Jason Mueller (congrats to him and to Mizzou A for the championship). Lowlights for this tournament include extreme sleep deprivation, being sick the whole time, getting 15 points with the answer "the thumbs up," answering with "vagina" on a question whose correct answer was "monotreme," and - most notably - the absence of teammates. Highlights (apart from those already mentioned) include the best game of Chad's career (4-9-0), finally breaking the infamous 400 just when it counted most, and meeting a whole new array of excellent people (including tournament director Bill Stallard -- sincere thanks for a truly marvelous time). Clearly, this is an area that should be revisited.

The cancellation of the Georgia Tech MLK ACF tournament meant that Seth, left without anything to do for the weekend, decided to revisit Michigan's monster MLK after a year away in the hopes that Chad's glowing report of last year's more accessible and better questions, as well as power tossups, would lead to his enjoying the tournament more than he had in years past. It turns out that Chad's report was indeed not too far in error: playing on questions which were easy and nowhere near as Current-Events and trash-filled as had been dreaded, the UKAT - playing as the Dodgeball-inspired "Crushed by Two Tons of Irony" with Chad and Seth aided by stalwarts Will and Gerald - embarassed itself horribly against VCU (Matt Weiner) and the Subash-led Chicago B but ran the table thereafter (including some thrilling wins against Chicago D and Michigan State) to finish third in the bracket, out of the playoffs but unbitter as that meant the team could get back on the road at a decent hour. Lowlights are few beyond the two-aforementioned beatings; among the highlights include the fact that everyone seemed to play well, Seth managed to rope in a book of Dryden's works for winning fourth place individual scorer, and we got to hang out with cool cats like Dan Passner from Brandeis, fellow-Southerners Vanderbilt, and Will's friend Asim from the Michigan squad.
That said, by far the more amusing time was had on the ride back. Among the non-play related highlights include running across a great radio station (on which the Ataris, Bad Company, L'il Kim, Sugar Ray, and Men at Work were heard in the same half-hour) and this statue seen en route which inspired some late-night stopping by the side of I-75 to capture it on a cell-phone camera; it really made the trip. All in all, a good time.

Cancellations of other tournaments has meant that during the months between the end of Winter Break and ACF Regionals in February no ACF events were on the calendar, and thus bereft of his preferred format Seth had decided to give official NaQT questions another try and see if an open mind, along with the certainty he had no chance of winning the tournament (in the absence of Robert and Kelly, without whose powers victory was out of the question) and thus no expectation of doing so, would mean fun could be had. Therefore, Seth (playing as "Quasi-Murderer", in reference to a great bust on noted imbecile Bill O'Reilly) joined Chad and Dana (Team B) and Will, Ryan, and Lyle (Team C) for an uneventful trip down to UTC. Separated into their respective divisions the next morning, "Quasi-Murderer" finished a lackluster sixth place on reasonable albeit CE/Trash-laden questions (if there was too much geography, as went the complaints, this was not readily apparent), his own play notable for the colossal amounts of five-point penalties amassed (he would finish tied for second overall in that category). In Division II, the one-two punch of Ryan and Will supported by Lyle led to a respectable sixth-place finish which included a victory over Chad and Dana, who finished second overall in Division II behind Florida C (congratulations to them). Lowlights were few (they include two horrible games against South Florida A and B for Seth, a stupid packet mixup in Division I which resulted in use of different packets which may have contributed to that, and a statistical mixup which led to Ryan and Will both incorrectly credited with vast numbers of interrupts and thus prevented their decoration at the awards ceremony, though soon resolved) and outbalanced by the highlights, which include an excellent comedic incident involving one of the teams in Division I, the B team's outstanding finish, Seth's MVP in Division I and Chad's in Division II, and belated decorations for Ryan and Will (check out the balance in scoring). All in all, far from a bad time.
