UKAT Summer 2004

UGA Film Tournament

When Chris Borglum announced at the end of the 2004 Moon Pie that he was considering hosting a mirror of the Berkeley Film tournament, a great enthusiasm was kindled in Christy and Seth until the final acceptance of the fact that great distance involved in getting to Orlando seemed destined to prohibit the UKAT's attendance. However, the stars soon aligned such that Georgia took over the hosting duties instead, with the result that on May 21st Chad, Christy, Rebecca, and Seth crossed the mountains and backroads of East Tennessee and North Carolina and arrived in Athens to play at the event the next day. Run, after much backstage maneuvering, as a singles tournament, Christy finished twelfth (put out by Rebecca), Rebecca finished eighth (put out by Chad), Chad finished fourth (put out by Seth), and Seth finished second (put out by UGA alumm and tournament winner Mark Franklin, whose play was impressive). Certain difficulties encountered by the group notwithstanding, a good time seems to have been had by all.

Note: Typically NaQT-style tournaments are reported and ranked by total points to reflect the variable number of tossups to be gotten in each round due to the vagaries of timed games. However, at this tournament packets were read as 20 untimed tossups, so points per game seems appropriate. Moreover, Seth has one fewer game than the other team, due to one of the teams there deciding to depart before playing him; finally, while the "Campbell" team consists of no current UKAT players, Christopher Manker is a recent graduate, and Jonathan may play next year. Besides, it's summer, and I don't feel like being too much of a stickler. Anyway ...

For a variety of reasons - the opportunity to get out of Lexington/Middlesborough/Pikeville, to get some buzzing in before the Chicago Open, and just to have something to do - Bobbi Jo, Chad, Gerald, and Seth made the familiar trek to UTC where, due to Gerald's Marriott connections, they got to stay in a lovely hotel and sample the fare to be offered at a great Greek-Italian restaurant in preparation for the next day's playing. Having split into two squads which were joined at the tournament site the next morning by a team consisting of UKAT alumnus Christopher Manker, his brother Jonathan, and friend Rick Carr, they proceeded to try their skills against a fairly mild field on pretty good questions; as per usual, no official stats have been released (Seth had the individuals printed), so the records and placements of the other teams are uncertain, but at the end of the day Seth went in to the playoffs as the number #2 seed and ended as the second-place finisher behind Wesley Matthews and his crew from Indiana; congratulations to them. Causes for complaint can always be found (the oppressive heat in the building was disastrous, for some stupid reason the field voted - before the UKAT members arrived, by the way - to have computation tossups, and we got lost on the way home), but in the final analysis the event was a fairly good time; all the teams played well, and Jonathan Manker, Chad, and Seth won scoring awards (Seth as MVP), so there we are.

Note: Gerald and Robert's team, because of the interesting scheduling system devised at this tournament, is correctly shown here in the statistics with one fewer game than Seth's. Also, while technically this page is for UKAT members only, Gerald wrote the packet and therefore his team is being counted as a Kentucky team even if two of its members were UTC folks. Again, it's summer, and I don't feel like being too much of a stickler. Anyway ...

This year's UTC Moc Masters has elicited mixed emotions from the three UKAT members who attended. For Seth, poor play and bad luck in terms of bonuses took their toll, leading to several last-tossup victories, one last-tossup loss, and a five-point defeat in the concluding shoot-out to cost him the tournament to Georgia Tech (congratulations to them). Moreover, it is safe to say that Semones had a pretty terrible time, as the questions did not suit him and resulted in a statistical record less illustrious than per his usual performance. Then again, for Gerald the day was a qualified triumph, in that his maiden effort at packet composition was well-received by editors and the field, and his efforts at improvement had led to better play (he and Semones played with UTC members David Moore and John Kilby, though their record is not yet known in the absence of posted statistics). Thus, a so-so outing; positives exist in the form of a fair haul at the bookstore, fine dining at the Acropolis, catching Chris Rock's comedy special (from a line in which Gerald and Semones drew their team name), hearing of Maddux's 300th win the night before, and MVP honors for Seth, but on balance it's best to leave this tournament behind and let the curtain fall on the summer whilst looking ahead to the upcoming fall semester.
