  1. Why is the group called AWARE?
    1. AWARE is an acronym for Alliance Working To Achieve Racial Equality. We are an alliance because we have a diverse membership who agree on the problem of racism. We are also "working" towards that goal, realizing that it is not something that can be achieved from a brief one time effort. Also, we realize that one of the best tools to fight racism is to help people become AWARE of the problem.

     

  2. What can I expect to occur at an AWARE meeting?
    1. AWARE meetings are educated and constructive dicussions centering around issues of race and ethnic diversity. There will be a dialogue portion of each session during which everyone will have a chance to speak if they so choose. Some key issues discussed will be the difference between racial prejudice and racism,stereotyping, institutionalized racism, and the oneness of humanity. When possible there will be videos and guest speakers.

     

  3. Does AWARE have an official stand on political issues?
    1. No. AWARE provides members with factual information and possible viewpoints, and allows each individual to walk away with her or his own perspective.

     

  4. Is AWARE a/n international-, national-, state-, or university-wide organization?
    1. AWARE is a registered student organization at the University of Kentucky. AWARE serves the University of Kentucky and Lexington community.

     

  5. Who belongs to AWARE?
    1. Any person who attends AWARE meetings is considered an AWARE member. AWARE meetings bring together people of different nationality and ethnicity, of both genders, and of widely differing opinions and viewpoints, from the campus and community. AWARE members have the common characteristic of a willingness to have on open peaceful discussion about racism, one of society's most sensitive and explosive issues.

     

  6. Who can belong to AWARE? Are there dues?
    1. Any person is welcome to participate in AWARE. We have student, staff and faculty members as well as community participants. There are no monetary obligations, we only ask that members attend meetings regularly and be respectful of others.

     

  7. What is the AWARE Steering Committee?
    1. The AWARE Steering Committee is a group of AWARE members who meet twice a month to plan upcomming AWARE meetings and activities. See the Steering Committee page.

     

  8. How do I join the AWARE steering committee?
    1. We are always looking for persons who realize the importance of a group like AWARE at UK and are willing to give sometime and energy to make the group a success. If you are such a person contact Anne Achico at achico@mik.uky.edu.

     

  9. Is AWARE affiliated with any organizations?
    1. No, there is no formal affiliation with any national or campus organization. AWARE does work with other groups on specific projects, though.

     

  10. In what ways is AWARE active on campus?
    1. AWARE holds bi-monthly meetings where persons can express their concerns about racism on campus or in the larger community. AWARE also maintains a web page which is a rich source of information on a variety of topics. Also, AWARE work s with other groups to bring enriching lectures to the university campus. In addition, AWARE helps to coordinate several volunteer indeveaors between students and the community.

     

  11. How do I sign up to be informed about AWARE meetings?
    1. AWARE sends out a bi-monthly electronic newsletter informing recipients of times and topics for upcomming meetings. To receive this newsletter email AWARE On-Line.

     

  12. When did AWARE form as a group at UK?
    1. The first official AWARE meeting was Sept. 6, 1995. The group evolved from the Institute For the Healing Of Racism which was formed partly to deal with tensions involving the shooting of Tony Sullivan.
