The University of Kentucky Fencing Club serves the fencing needs of students, faculty, and staff of the university. We offer both a recreational atmosphere for learning about and enjoying the sport and a competitive environment for tournament preparation.

How can I join the UK Fencing Club?

To join, you have to be UK affiliated or the spouse or the child of UK Faculty, Staff, or a Student. If you are interested in learning to fence or simply want to continue the sport at UK, just stop by during practice. No prior experience is necessary.

Where and when do you meet?

Every Tuesday and Thursday, from 8-10pm, in the Buell Armory, when the university is having classes and most of the summer. Fencers from other clubs are always welcome to drop in.

How much does it cost?

Club dues are $25 for the semester or $40 for the year. To compete in tournaments, you will need to purchase a US Fencing Association (USFA) membership, which currently costs about $50 annually.

What should I wear? Do I need special equipment?

The best attire is something that is loose and comfortable, especially around the upper thighs. Jogging pants are good, but really, whatever you are more comfortable with. Tennis shoes are also recommended. We can provide you with equipment when you first begin, although you will likely find you will want your own gear over time, especially if you want to compete in tournaments.

What type of fencing do you do?

Fencing has three weapons: foil, epee, and saber. Here most members start out with foil. Foil has a specific target area that includes the groin, torso, and back. We also can teach saber--a more slashing style, targeting from the waist up, aside from the hands--and epee, which uses the entire body as a target.
