2016 3MT Information and Application Instructions

All graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Applicants are asked to upload a one-minute (maximum) YouTube video about their current research and to provide the video link in the application. The video is similar to an abstract or one-minute elevator speech about your research.

Once your video is complete and uploaded, visit the 2016 3MT Application to submit.

The top contestants will compete in one of two preliminary heats, held October 24th and 25th from 5:30-7:00 in the UKAA Auditorium (place is tentative) where you will present your full 3-minute thesis (if you have a conflict with one of these dates and are chosen to compete in the preliminaries, contact us so we can make necessary arrangements).

The final will be held on November 15, from 5:30-7:00 in the Kincaid Auditorium in Gatton Building.

Step-by-step instructions, with an example video and a link to help with uploading your video, are provided below.

Prizes in the Final 3MT Competition include:
1st Place: $1,000.00
2nd Place: $500.00
3rd Place: $250.00
People's Choice: $125.00

Additionally, the 1st place winner will go on to represent UK (travel expenses paid) at the Southern Council of Graduate Schools Regional Competition to be held March 2-5, 2017, in Annapolis, MD.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Check out the Three-Minute Thesis Grading Rubric to familiarize yourself with what categories are deemed important for a good speech

2. Create a one-minute video of an elevator speech about your current research. Here is an example:

3. Visit the 2016 3MT Application. Follow the instructions to enter your information, upload your video and your presentation slide in PDF.

4. You will be contacted about your proposal. If accepted, you will be notified about a preliminary heat.

5. A panel of five judges will grade all 3MT participants in preliminary as well as final. At the end of all presentations, scores will be tallied and winners announced.
