Lexington, KY: University of Kentucky (UK) HepKats Swing Dance Club. Now, for a bit of shameless self promotion! The UK Swing Dance Club is the only organization in Lexington/central Kentucky that provides instruction on the original swing dances of the 1930's and 40's: Lindy Hop, Balboa and Collegiate Shag. The Club also sponsors several swing dances each year, some with live music, the quality of which is not often seen in Lexington. Click here for more info. |
| Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra (KJRO). KJRO, co-directed by University of Kentucky School of Music Professors Dick Domek and Miles Osland, is a 17-member professional ensemble dedicated to the preservation and performance of jazz music. KJRO is a band that is especially suited for and highly skilled at recreating authentic swing-era arrangements of the great big bands: Jimmie Lunceford, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Harlan Leonard, to mention just a few. KJRO members consist of the finest and most talented faculty members, alumni and musicians from Kentucky area colleges and universities. Many of the songs KJRO plays are not played very often at live music venues in their original arrangement by your average "big band" or "swing band" due to their technical difficulty. If you get a chance to attend a swing dance (or a concert) featuring KJRO, don't miss it! |
