American Courtesies
- This point is esp for guys. Do remember that holding hands together while walking or having your hands over other's shoulder has a different meaning in this country. Try to avoid such acts.
- Make sure you return a HI or a smile if you happen to see someone do the same to you(never mind whether you know the person or not)
- Cultivate the habit of addressing Professors by their last or first name with appropriate prefix(Dr. Prof,Mr etc) and stop saying "Sir" unless the person wants you to call him that way.
- There is nothing wrong in starting an email to a Professor with Mr/Ms. when you are not sure if the name is masculine or feminine.
- Cant follow their accent? ASK AGAIN. People here do not mind repeating. Also remember that you might have to talk slowly to people here as they are not used to our accent either!!!

Crossing Roads
Remember, that in US the cars are coming with very high speed. If a car stops
or yields on the highway for the pedestrians, then it may lead to an accident.
So kindly, cross the roads only if the car is atleast 200 meters
away from you. Do not run and cross the road.
We have added this column, because it has been found that several new students are careless in crossing the
roads.
- Please make sure that you press the button for the walk signal and cross only after you see the "man" symbol flash.
- In places where you dont have signals, make sure you wait on the road end and cross only when it is safe to do so.
- If a vehicle stops for you to cross the road, wave your hand as a mark of
thanking them. You'll see this happen very often here.
Note: In US, all the vehicles are driven to your right unlike in India, so cross the roads cautiously.

Food... I am Hungry!
Ofcourse you must be hungry, when you arrive. The best thing you can try is PIZZA. You get both veg. and nonveg. pizzas. But to be on the safer side
order a veg. pizza. Order a small pizza if you are alone or a medium size is enough for two or three (well it depends upon your appetite
actually). To be sure about the veg. items, always ask for items with No Meat rather than Without Meat.
Here is a guide for Vegetarian Dishes:
- Mexican
Bean Buritto, Enchiliadas, Bean Taco, Cheese Taco, Bean Tostadas, Mexican pizza
- Italian or Greek
Eggplant(brinjal) sandwich, Sphagetti with tomato sauce, Lasagna(pronounced
Laza-nya), Italian Pizza, Italian pasta
with tomato sauce, Veg. Gyro(pronounced Yero)
- Denn's
Vegetable omlete(with eggs), Vegetable lunch/dinner(salad, potato smash, garlic
sauce)
- American restraunts (Sizzler)
Best bet is salad and French fries
- McDonald's
Mac cheese sandwich, Milk shakes, Ice-cream sundaes
- Pizza Hut
Veggie Lover's delight, Veggie pizza with a choice of toppings such as
Jalpenoes(pronounced as Hala-pin-yose and are green chillies), pineapple, tomato, onions etc.
- Burger King
Vege cheese whooper, Garden burger

Social Security and Driving Licenses
You will get your Social Security during your Orientation Week.
You will have to give a driving test to get a
Driving License. So even if you bring your International Driving Permit it
won't help you. It's better if you have your Indian Driving License
before coming here in order to get a license easily.
