The Official Constitution for the Pre-Veterinary Medical Club

at the University of Kentucky.

 

ARTICLE I:                 Name

Section 1:                     The organization shall be known as the Pre-Veterinary Medical Club at the University of Kentucky.

 

ARTICLE II:                Purpose

Section 1:                     The PreVet Club is a pre-professional student club. The purpose of the Pre-Vet Club at UK is to give our members opportunities in the      veterinary community, to stimulate interest in veterinary medicine and provide useful information. These efforts include hosting monthly speakers on interesting topics in veterinary medicine, taking field trips, providing a realistic idea of vet school, and posting internships and jobs.

 

ARTICLE III:               Separation of Powers

The Pre-Vet club shall consist of the general membership, the Executive Council, and all committees within the club.

 

ARTICLE IV:              Membership

Section 1:                     Eligibility

The Pre-Vet club shall consist of any and all members of the University of Kentucky and Lexington Community College who are interested in the field of veterinary medicine. Membership to this organization shall not be denied to any person on the basis of sex, creed, religion, or national origin.

 

Section 2:                     Voting Rights

                                                Voting shall be open to all members who have paid dues.

To preserve the integrity of the club, voting privileges shall be revoked upon non-attendance at a previously scheduled event in which sign-ups were mandatory.

 

Section 3:                     Active Participation

To be considered an active participant within the Pre-Vet Club, one shall pay the dues for the given year, and attend at least two meetings each semester, and one Pre-Vet activity each semester.

 

ARTICLE V:                Meetings

Section 1:                     Regular meetings shall be held on the first Wednesday of each month, excluding August and January.

 

Section 2:                     Meetings shall be called by the President.

 

Section 3:                     Meetings must be announced one week prior to the meeting to the general membership.

 

Section 4:                     The Executive Council shall have the power to change the date, time or place of the meetings if deemed necessary provided that an advanced notice of the change be circulated at least 48 hours prior to the proposed date.

 

ARTICLE VI:              Executive Council

Section 1:                     Membership- The Executive Council shall consist of the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Agriculture Student Council representative, and Freshman Delegate.

 

Section 2:                     Executive Council meetings shall be held at the discretion of said Council. Council meetings are open to all members of the organization, unless otherwise announced at least one week in advance.

 

Section 3:                     It shall be the duty of the Executive Council to direct and coordinate all proceedings of this organization.

 

Section 4:                     All elected officers and chairpersons are expected to attend all the Executive Council meetings. If the President or Secretary is informed of an absence prior to the Executive Council meeting, then the officer or chairperson will be excused.

                                               

ARTICLE VII:            Officers

The officers of the Pre-Vet Club shall be elected by a majority of the membership.

 

Section 1:                     President

                                                -The chief executive officer of the club.

-Has the responsibility of the good and efficient management of the club.

                                                -Serves as the official representative of the club.

                                                -Arranges and presides over all meetings.

                                                -Oversees all committees.

                                                -Casts the deciding vote in the case of a tie.

-Coordinates the speaker for each meeting, plans club events, finalizes dates.

 

Section 2:                     Vice-President

                                                -Performs the duties of President in his/her absence.

                                                -Oversees all of the club’s community service activities.

                                                -Fulfills other requests as delegated by the President.

Section 3:                     Secretary

-Records all minutes of all general and executive meetings and posts those in case of member’s absence.

                                                -Carries on correspondence of club.

                                                -Preserves letters, papers and documents of the club.

                                                -Updates and maintains the club’s bulletin board.

 

Section 4:                     Treasurer

-Oversees the receipts and disbursements of the club’s funds and keeps an accurate and itemized account thereof.

                                                -Collects dues and distributes receipt to paying members.

 

Section 5:                     Ag. Student Council Representative

-Attends all student council meetings and evnts and represents the interests and opinions of the club.

-Presents at Dean’s Dinner in the spring semester of the club’s annual functions.

 

Section 6:                     Freshman Delegate

-Attends all Executive council meetings and represents the concerns and interests of the freshman class.

-Makes flyers at least one week prior to each meeting and posts them around campus buildings.

 

Section 7:                     Vacancies occurring in any office, except in the office of President, shall be filled by special election for the remainder of the term. In the event of vacancy in the office of President, the Vice President shall succeed to the office and a special election shall be held for a new Vice President.

 

ARTICLE VIII:            Committees

Section 1:                     Technical Services

-Maintains and updates the Pre-Veterinary Medical Club’s website

 

Section 2:                     When there is significant club interest in attending the American Pre-Veterinary Medical Symposium, the following chairs shall be appointed.

-Fundraiser/Sponsorship Chair shall seek efforts to raise money to fund or supplement the interested club member’s trip expenses.

-Travel Coordinator shall investigate travel arrangements to allow the club to travel together.

 

ARTICLE IX:              Elections

Section 1:                     Eligibility

Any full-time student who has been a member of the Pre-Vet Club for at least one semester may run for office, excluding the position of Freshman delegate. The person must be in good academic standing and have paid dues.

 

Section 2:                     Nominations

The nomination for offices will be held at the beginning of meeting on the third or fourth meeting of spring semester. Nominations for a peer or self-nominations shall be received.

 

Section 3:                     Election Meeting

Each officer and chairperson shall be separately elected by secret ballot in the order of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Agriculture Student Representative, Freshman Delegate, and Technical Service Manager.

 

Section 4:                     Voting Procedure

Every member in good academic and financial standing shall have one vote per office. There must be at least 20 members present at time of election in order to seat offices.

 

Section 5:                     Officers shall be elected for a term of one year.

 

Section 6:                     Officers may be relieved of duty by a two-thirds majority vote of the Executive Council for non-performance of duty. The vote shall be conducted by secret ballot. A hearing shall be held prior to this vote by the Executive Council. The outcome shall be announced at the general meeting following the vote.

 

ARTICLE X:                Faculty Advisor

Section 1:                     The Faculty Advisor shall be a faculty member of the University of Kentucky.

 

ARTICLE XI:              Dues

Section 1:                     Dues shall be set at a specified amount each year by vote of the Executive Council.

 

Section 2:                     Dues must be paid in full each year.

 

Section 3:                     Dues must be paid in full before an individual may attend any club functions. Extenuating circumstances will be considered for all members.

 

Section 4:                     The failure to show for a Pre-Vet Club activity, in which there were sign-ups or RSVPs, without advance notice of your absence to the Faculty Advisor, President, or Chair of that activity shall result in a fine of $25. Failure to pay this fine shall result in loss of voting privileges and probation to attend any other Pre-Vet events until the fine is paid in full.
