Queer Info is the second UK lesbigay/trans student group.
UK Lambda has provided multiple services to the campus
community for the past several years, but more recently as the organization
has grown and changed, we saw the need for an organization that
focuses entirely on disseminating
information to the community. We were particularly concerned
that the oldest queer organization
in Kentucky, the G.L.S.O. (Gay and Lesbian Services Organization,)
had to eliminate its long-running community phone line. With the
Pride Center Task Force's queer community center project still years from
completion, no phone line, and a growing need for information in Lexington,
we formed QueerInfo as an organization to fill the vacuum.
"We" are former UK Lambda Co-President of two years Julien Aleksandres, queer historian Dr. Anthony McIntire, and former UK Lambda Treasurer Eric Madison.
Our goals are to set up and maintain these web pages,
to operate the Queer Space List,
Qspace@lsv.uky.edu, to reestablish a gay telephone line in
Lexington, to revive Julien's cable access television show, and
eventually to host a regular speakers program at UK on queer-
related topics.
Many activists and scholars preach about the need to reclaim the word from those who hurl it as an insult, thereby depriving them of the power to hurt us. For us, it's really simpler than that: "queer" is an umbrella term that includes everyone with non-straight affectional orientations or gender identifications. And it's a lot easier than saying "lesbian, gay, biaffectional, and transgendered"! We do not imply any political affiliations by use of the word, nor is it a socio-political statement against other terms.
One final point: hetero-affectionals can be queer too. Not all strayts are straight! "Queer" means all of us, ultimately, living in a non-heterosexist world.
QueerInfo isn't an activist group, nor is it a support group.
But we are definately an information group. If you have any ideas we should
hear about, or you'd like to be involved in some way -- either helping with
the web pages (we love links!), the TV production, or just to say
hello or whatever -- we'd love to hear from you. Drop Andy a line at:
