The Queer Space List was established by Anthony McIntire in early 1995 in response to a problem encountered by friends of his. Gay and lesbian architecture and interior design students are increasingly grappling with issues related to what makes a space queer or queer-friendly, but academic discourse on the topic remains stunted.

Students at UK, for instance, get very little in the way of meaningful feedback on queer projects in architecture and design. Instead, they get positive or negative reactions, based on the politics of their professors. Qspace was established to help provide viable academic discourse on these issues.

As an e-mail list, Qspace works by quickly distributing copies of all e-mail sent to the list address to everyone on the list. Replies to the same address also get distributed to everyone. In this way, ongoing discussions and exchange of ideas can take place among people who are located around the world.

As an aside, an article of interest by Randal Woodland, "Queer Spaces, Modem Boys, and Pagan Statues: Gay/Lesbian Identity and the Construction of Cyberspace" is located here. One reviewer has this to say: "The article is an overview of both gay male and lesbian spaces on four different computer systems and a survey of their dominant features. Woodland explores 'the constraints of each system and the particular constructions of gay and/or lesbian identity that undergird it.'"

Who is it for? The Queer Space List is for anyone interested in architecture, interior design, art, or furniture design, and who wishes to explore the intersections of these fields with the gay, lesbian, and bisexual experience.

The list is not "moderated" -- meaning that postings are not screened in any way in advance of distribution. But be advised that basic civility is expected, and anyone who behaves in a disruptive fashion can be removed from the list. This is not censorship in our minds, but rather basic courtesy.
