QSTUDY-L is a forum for academic discussions pertaining to queer theory, an umbrella term encompassing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual/transgender studies. QSTUDY-L is also intended to promote networking and information sharing between teachers, researchers, librarians, and students -- anyone involved or interested in the field of queer studies. Posting announcements about relevant conferences or publications, calls for papers, job opportunities, or anything else relevant to the topic of queer studies is encouraged, though only subscribers may post to the list. It is hoped that QSTUDY-L will serve additionally as a repository for syllabi, bibliographies, and other items of interest relating to Queer Studies.

Formerly queer-studies at ferkel.ucsb.edu, QSTUDY-L changed its name when it moved to the State University of New York at Buffalo in July, 1994. Ellen Greenblatt turned over the list to the current listowner, Andy McIntire, aamcin0@ukcc.uky.edu, in April 1997.

General Information on using the list: As an e-mail list, Qstudy-l works by quickly distributing e-mail sent to the list address to everyone on the list. Replies to the same address also get distributed to everyone. In this way, ongoing discussions and exchange of ideas can take place among people scattered all over the world.

It is important to note, however, that subscription requests and updates must be sent directly to the computer that manages the mail distribution. Send all requests to subscribe, unsubscribe, or change delivery options to the list server, . Failure to do so will mean that the request is not processed, but rather is sent out to the entire list as normal e-mail.

It is also critical to use only one e-mail account for all transactions with the list and its server program. You cannot subscribe from one account and then unsubscribe from a different one because the list server program gets important information from the e-mail headers of messages, and they must be consistent. For this and other reasons it is a very bad idea to activate automatic forwarding for any account subscribed to an e-mail list. It's far better just to unsubscribe from the old account and resubscribe from the new one.

How to subscribe: Send e-mail to the list managing program at listserv@listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu. Leave the subject line blank and include the following line by itself in the body of the message (no signature files please, they just confuse the list manager program):

         subscribe qstudy-l Firstname Lastname

The list server will process your request within a few minutes. At that time, you will receive more information about Qstudy-l.

How to UNsubscribe: Send e-mail from the subscribed account to the list managing program at listserv@listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu. Leave the subject line blank and include the following line by itself in the body of the message (no signature files please!):

          unsubscribe qstudy-l

Your request to be removed will be processed automatically within a few minutes.

Other subscription options:There are several options for managing your subscription to Qstudy-l. In each case, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu with no subject and the appropriate command in the body of the message. Below are a few of the more common commands:

    Command: Action:

set qstudy-l nomail Temporarily suspends mail
                                delivery

set qstudy-l digest Deliver each day's messages in one

                                nomail or digest (above) setting

set qstudy-l norepro Sets the delivery system so
it will not send you a copy of
                                your own postings

set qstudy-l repro Sets the system to send you a
                                copy of your own postings

set qstudy-l ack Tells the system to send you a
                                brief acknowledgment of receipt
                                of posts you make

set qstudy-l noack Turns off the acknowledgment
                                feature above.
