    Course requirements:
    **   attendance at, and active participation in every class meeting
    **   preparation of materials prior to each class meeting 
    **   one short (5-10pp.) paper due on 1 October 1997
    **   one longer paper (10-15pp.) due on the last day of class (17
         December 1997

    As a small, discussion-based, research-oriented graduate seminar, this
    class will benefit from the intimate scale and conditions under which
    we will be working together.  This will be assured thanks to active
    participation and engagement with the materials and each other. 
    Please note that paper deadlines are non-negotiable, and therefore I
    will not accept papers after the date on which they are due.
