SWA is not only about attending meetings, having fun at socials, and participating in fund-raisers, community service projects, and other SWA activities. SWA is a resource for all social work majors. You connect with other students and professionals. You learn about practicum placements, opportunities, and information that you might not receive only in the classroom.
In the past SWA members have attended Council on Social Work Education and National Association of Social Workers conferences. Members volunteered their time in exchange for free or reduced registration fees. Members met social workers from around the country, participated in highly informative workshops, heard speakers, attended graduate school fairs, plus more. In order to help defray costs, SWA conducts several fund-raisers. Attending a conference with SWA helps you with transportation and lodging logistics. Do not pass up this wonderful opportunity!!!
Bring your lunch and gather with other social work majors to hear local guest speakers discuss a variety of issues that affect our communities and profession. In the past, SWA members learned about social work and Hispanic communities, diversity, homophobia, medical social work , managed care, and the Code of Ethics.
SWA believes that community service is an important part of our club. SWA usually commits to two or three projects per semester, and we like to have fun doing them. SWA members have participated in Repair Affair, AIDS Walk, and Migrant Workers Network Coalition Health Fair. They have served dinners at the HOPE Center, trick-or-treated children at the UK Children's Hospital, and constructed a gingerbread house for a charity auction that benefitted Volunteers of America.
Dues are $10 per semester. When you first join, you will receive a College of Social Work bumpersticker and a SWA membership card. Dues are used for club activities and expenses. If there is any problem with paying dues, please talk with an officer. (We understand firsthand that student's money is tight.)
SWIRL stands for Social Work Information and Resource List. By signing up for this list serv, you will receive information by e-mail about upcoming SWA events and other opportunities, such as scholarships, and information from the College of Social Work.
If you attend class regularly, consider becoming a class representative. All you have to do is announce upcoming SWA events in your social work classes. If you are interested, please indicate on the membership form. You will be contacted by an officer and placed on a phone list. One of the officers will contact you to remind you about the class announcements.
