  • Census Watch, ESRI site with access to information on Census-related data resources, redistricting, online GIS mapping, education and training, as well as news and articles.

  • Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), provides information useful for the study of global change, sustainable development, and human interactions in the environment.

  • Center for Political and Strategic Studies

  • Country Studies/Area Handbooks, from the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress. Series of online books offering analysis of the political, economic, social, and cultural systems of various countries.

  • Country Web Sites (excluding the U.S.)

  • County and City Data Books for 1988 and 1994. From the University of Virginia Social Science Data Center. Searchable, it contains demographic, economic, and governmental variables from both federal government and private agency sources, presented for the purpose of multi-area comparisons or single area profiles. Users can choose areas and variables, and there is an option under county and city data to pick all the counties or cities of a particular state. Output can be sorted in three ways, and can be displayed to the browser or saved in an ftp file as either browser output, or comma delimited output for later importing into statistical applications.

  • Cyber Geography Research

  • Demographers' Resources on the Internet, designed as a supplement to Thomas Gryn's 'Internet Resources for Demographers' paper (Version III).

  • Demographic Profile Generator Basic Tables, allows users to generate a single 1990 demographic profile report by census tract, block group, city, ZIP code, state, county or metro area for anywhere in the United States.

  • Demographic Research, peer-reviewed online journal of the population sciences published by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. Available in both HTML and .pdf formats.

  • Educational Resources for Cartography, Geography, and Related Disciplines, from the U.S. Geological Survey. For K-12.

  • Electronic Atlas, from the Association of Research Libraries. The ARL Electronic Atlas Project is a collaborative effort of participants in the Association of Research Libraries GIS Literacy Project. Maps in this Electronic Atlas have been created using ArcView software from Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.(ESRI), boundary map files from Wessex, Inc., and statistical data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

  • European Geography Test, a collection of exams that survey knowledge of European topography, map skills and urban geography.

  • Federal Geographic Data Committee, with links to federal, state and local spatial data sources.

  • Global Population Distribution Database

  • Heritage Map Museum, original 15th to 19th century maps. Works of Schedel, Munster, Ortelius, Mercator, Blaeu, & Hondius.

  • How Far Is It?, uses the University of Michigan Geographic Name Server to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places, using the Xerox PARC Map Server.

  • Independent States in the World, State Department listing of current country names.

  • IPUMS, from the University of Minnesota. Provides on-line access to the public-access population database. Composed of national samples of thirteen U.S. censuses from 1850 through 1990. Quantitative source for the study of long-run social and economic change
