World-Wide Web Resources
Latin American and Spanish Literature

General Resources

  • Clase and Periodica, available via FirstSearch. Indexes documents published in Latin American journals (from 24 different countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as from publications that focus on Pan-American issues) specializing in social sciences and humanities (Clase), and science and technology (Periodica). Covers 2,600 scholarly journals published in Spanish, Portuguese, French and English, plus monographs, conference proceedings, and technical reports. Accessible via campus computers. Also available off-campus for UK faculty, students and staff; follow these proxy server access instructions.

  • MLA International Bibliography (plus ABELL plus Full-Text) via LION/Chadwyck-Healey/ProQuest). (Covers the 1880s - present; updated 9 times a year.) The Modern Language Association International Bibliography contains references to language and literature commentary in books, book collections and articles from over 4,400 journals; more than 66,000 records in over 60 languages are currently added each year. The index also includes dictionaries, catalogs, handbooks, bibliographies, indexes, other reference works, published working papers, conference papers, conference proceedings, citations of dissertations from Dissertations Abstracts International, handbooks, anthologies for teaching, syllabi, textbooks, and curriculum guides. Subject coverage includes:

  • Literature: from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America
  • Folklore: folk literature, music, art, rituals, and belief systems
  • Language and linguistics: the study of languages from any historical period, including history and theory of linguistics, comparative linguistics, semantics, stylistics, syntax and translation
  • Literary theory and criticism
  • Dramatic arts: film, radio, television and theatre
  • History of printing and publishing
  • Teaching of language, literature, rhetoric and composition at college level (from 1998 onwards)
  • In addition to the contents of the annual volumes (which record scholarship from around 1960 onwards), the electronic version of the bibliography also includes subject-indexed records for the entire runs of journals from JSTOR's Language and Literature collection. This comprises over 50,000 records, including material from journals from as far back as the 1880s. Connect to JSTOR or the Fulltext Online Journals Database (FOJD) to access the full-text of those articles.
Please Note: The LION search interface that includes the MLA International Bibliography (MLAIB) is labeled Search : Criticism & Reference (All). When you use this interface, you are also searching bibliographic citations from ABELL (the MHRA's Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature), biographies, reference works and web sites as well as the MLA International Bibliography. You can search the MLA International Bibliography in a stand-alone version; however, the full-text of articles is not available in the stand-alone version.
To see copies of the resources referenced in MLAIB and ABELL, look for the following icons to the left of each citation (the source of each citation is labeled to distinguish the source of the citation):

For those items that do not have full-text links via LION, or if you are using the stand-alone version of the MLAIB, search the InfoKat catalog using a journal or book title search to see if we own a paper version of the item. You may also search magazine or journal titles in the Fulltext Online Journals Database to see if we have access to an electronic copy from other full-text services.
If we don't have access to the resources you locate in MLAIB, UK affiliates may make an Interlibrary Loan request via your ILLiad account.
Accessible via campus computers. Also available off-campus for UK faculty, students and staff; follow these proxy server access instructions.
