    Data Resources

  • Crime and Justice Electronic Data Abstracts, US Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics database that include selected data through 1996. Lotus spreadsheets (.wk1) are available in 55 subjects covering crimes and arrests, criminal justice, and general demography. The data is "aggregated...from a wide variety of published sources" and presented in this format to facilitate further analysis. Data is available at the national, state, county, and city level. Currency varies by file.

  • Data on the Net, from the University of California at San Diego. Contains a searchable and browsable database of over 750 "Internet sites of numeric Social Science statistical data, data catalogs, data libraries, social science gateways, addresses." Sites are categorized into data sites, catalogs of data, data archives and vendors of data.

  • A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation: U. S. Congressional Documents & Debates 1774-1873. From the Library of Congress' American Memory Project.

  • Congressional Biographical Directory, from 1774 to the present.

  • Congressional Record Filter, resource for people following US legislative action on particular topics. Information filter for the US Congressional Record text and extends the resources of the Library of Congress' THOMAS search system. CRFilter creates a personalized search page for THOMAS, so that users can periodically check to see the latest developments in their areas of interest as well as search the CR back to 1989. Free service and should be of particular interest to people who regularly search with THOMAS, such as legislative assistants, librarians, journalists, lobbyists, researchers, and students. Part of a doctoral dissertation on the adoption of filtering technology being run by Steve Gant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Users are required to fill out a 40 question survey and agree to have the frequency (but not content) of their use of the filter measured.

    State and Local Politics and Government

  • County and City Data Books for 1988 and 1994. From the University of Virginia Social Science Data Center. Searchable, it contains demographic, economic, and governmental variables from both federal government and private agency sources, presented for the purpose of multi-area comparisons or single area profiles. Users can choose areas and variables, and there is an option under county and city data to pick all the counties or cities of a particular state. Output can be sorted in three ways, and can be displayed to the browser or saved in an ftp file as either browser output, or comma delimited output for later importing into statistical applications.

  • ElectNet, the state election watch. Covers local elections and politics and follows the candidates, organizations, links, and political resources state by state.

  • Fayette County, Kentucky Political Districts, includes searchable listing of representatives in Kentucky & local government by district. For Fayette county, there is a searchable index based on street names.

  • Congressional Record Filter, resource for people following US legislative action on particular topics. Information filter for the US Congressional Record text and extends the resources of the Library of Congress' THOMAS search system. CRFilter creates a personalized search page for THOMAS, so that users can periodically check to see the latest developments in their areas of interest as well as search the CR back to 1989. Free service and should be of particular interest to people who regularly search with THOMAS, such as legislative assistants, librarians, journalists, lobbyists, researchers, and students. Part of a doctoral dissertation on the adoption of filtering technology being run by Steve Gant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Users are required to fill out a 40 question survey and agree to have the frequency (but not content) of their use of the filter measured.
