Facilities
Overview
This section covers a selection of physical space in the Whitehall
Classroom Building for which we have first-hand knowledge. It
is not intended to be exhaustive in its survey. As befits our
mission, what will be shown here is related to audio-visual equipment
permanently installed in the service of classroom teaching.
Note that the Physical Plant Division maintains a site for tracking
physical space inventory. Here is their listing for the Classroom Building.
Equipment Definitions:
Internet Connected Computer- this refers to a built-in
computer with a 100Mbit wired Ethernet interface.
DVD- this is a dedicated DVD player. Note that a computer
may be available which will play most DVDs in that room.
VHS- this is a VHS video tape player. Not SVHS.
Pioneer laser disc- this is a player for the analog 12 inch
optical video discs developed by Pioneer. Not DVD.
3/4"- this is the UMatic video tape format developed
by JVC. Formerly used for broadcast applications, the tape is three quarters
of an inch wide. Not Super UMatic, the current broadcast standard.
Large Television Monitor- this is a CRT based video monitor
of at least 27" diagonal screen measurement.
LCD projector- this is a video projector with liquid crystal
panels inside. They are capable of handling NTSC/PAL/SECAM video signals as
well as RGB computer video formats like VGA, SVGA, XVGA, and MAC.
Document Camera- this is a stand with a camera pointing
down to a surface which is lit either from the top or through the base.
It is used to display to a large audience either pages in books (like
an opaque projector) or tranparencies (like an overhead projector.)
Audio Cassette- this is the familiar audio cassette
format developed by Phillips.
