Linden Dollars (L$)

The Second Life (SL) currency is measured in Linden dollars (L$). SL residents use their Linden dollars to pay for goods and services provided by other residents or to complete transactions, such as uploading photos. $1 in US dollars equals approximately 200L$. A current exchange rate can be found on the Second Life website, http://secondlife.com/currency/ (click on Buy L$ and then enter an amount of either US dollars or L$ to see the exchange).

A credit of $10 (US) will provide an account of more than L$5000. The following are examples of costs of items found in Second Life (please keep in mind that, as in real life, one must shop wisely for the best price):

  • Many, many items found on Info Island and other helpful sites: FREE
  • Upload a photo: 10L$
  • Various clothing items: From 10L$ to the hundreds (freebies available)
  • Shelter and furniture: Range from 100L$ to the thousands (freebies available)
  • Games: Range upwards from about 300$L (freebies available)
  • Educational helpers (seating, “whiteboards,” etc.): 50$L and up (freebies available)

The Office of Undergraduate Education will accept applications for 5000L$- 25000L$ to support courses, internships and projects based on University of KY Island as resources are available.

Please note: Amounts smaller than 5000L$ should be addressed by individuals, departments and colleges.

To apply for a L$ grant, please download and complete the linden dollars form (Word Document); please attach it to your email and return to Patsy Carruthers (Wildcat Thursday) at pcarr3@email.uky.edu.

L$ will be granted for courses, research and projects as funds are available on a year-round basis. Requests will be prioritized based on clear outcomes and evaluation plans, with special consideration give to those that return value to University of KY Island in some way (through research, building or other means). Please be sure to include all contact information, as clarification of the project or course may be requested during the review process.
