Cost Savings
For official University business air travel, the University encourages the traveler to obtain the lowest available airfare from the traveler's "home airport", which is the airport closest to the traveler's work station. In determining the lowest available airfare, you may want to consider using these guidelines or establishing similar cost savings strategies for your department.
- Choose flights that are no more than $50 above the lowest airfare offered by AAA, Trip Manager™, Avant Travel or Commonwealth Travel/The Travel Authority.
- Try to be flexible to accept flights that are within two hours before and two hours after your desired departure time. A "4-hour window" may produce more cost saving options as well as more desirable itineraries.
- Choose connecting flights instead of higher-priced nonstop flights.
For those travelers whose home airport is Lexington, as a convenience and for your information, AAA, Avant Travel and Commonwealth Travel/The Travel Authority will research airfares from Louisville and Cincinnati as well as from Lexington. Flights that are $200 or more less expensive out of Louisville or Cincinnati will be offered to the traveler, although the traveler is not required to accept them. However, if a traveler accepts such a flight, personal car mileage will be reimbursed to the traveler.
