Barbara Young holds a bachelor's degree from Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Virginia. She previously owned and operated Ashwood Travel Agency. She has been associated with numerous boards and organizations, including the Lexington Public Library Board of Trustees, The Lexington School Board of Trustees, W. T. Young Library Endowment Advisory Committee, and Sweet Briar College Board of Directors. She has served as president of the Henry Clay Memorial Foundation. While serving on the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2007, she served as chair of the University of Kentucky Hospital Committee. Since 2007, she has been serving as an advisory member to the committee.
