Quality of Life
Although not so tangible as health, education, the environment, or economic development, Kentuckians also appreciate the enjoyment of a good book, an evening at the theatre, museum, or art gallery, and the strength and sustenance gained from family and heritage. UK researchers are also working to enhance culture and quality of life as well as to make us more aware of our ongoing culture and the heritage of our shared past.
UK historians are creating an extended documentary history of Kentucky, teaching materials, a website, and a supporting book to raise the level of historical literacy from middle school social studies classes to the educated public. The documentary and related materials will demonstrate that Kentucky's past is central to and sheds light upon the American experience.
Access to the fine arts for Kentucky is equally important. UK's opera in the schools provides access to opera for K-6 schools and communities across Kentucky, exposing young children to the arts and leading them to make the arts part of their adult life.
Adding to existing Commonwealth Collaboratives bringing culture to Kentucky communities is the effort starting in 2008 in cooperation with the Kentucky Repertory Theatre in Horse Cave, Kentucky. This initiative will offer live classical, jazz, and Broadway music performances, providing cultural opportunities for residents of Hart, Barren, Edmonson, Grayson, Hardin, Green, Taylor, Metcalfe, and Larue County.
