FIRST COHORT FELLOWS

We congratulate the first cohort of Faculty Fellows (appointed for Spring 2014 through Spring 2015) from many different backgrounds, disciplines and representing eleven colleges:

MENTORING TEAM

Brandi N. Frisby, Faculty Fellows Coordinator, is an assistant professor and the Basic Communication Course Director in the Division of Instructional Communication and Research. Her research explores how students are engaged and learn in both face-to-face and mediated college classrooms. Her multimodal communication strengths include public speaking, interpersonal communication, group communication, and digital and social media.

Marjorie M. Buckner is a doctoral student in the College of Communication and Information. Her research focuses primarily on expressions of dissent in the classroom and workplace, as well as creating a conducive learning environment. Multimodal communication strengths include public speaking, interpersonal communication, and group communication.

Amy L. H. Gaffney is an assistant professor in the Division of Instructional Communication and Research. Her research is on the role of communication in teaching and learning as well as implementing communication instruction across the curriculum. Her multimodal communication strengths include basic public speaking, group communication, integrating writing and speaking, assessment, and informal assignments.

Sarah E. Kercsmar is a faculty lecturer in the Division of Instructional Communication and Research. She enjoys incorporating active learning strategies into face-to-face classrooms and adapting classes for distance and hybrid learning settings. Her multimodal communication strengths include public speaking, arguments, group communication, and using technology in the classroom.

Michael Pennell is an associate professor in the Division of Instructional Communication and Research. He brings experience from eight years as a faculty member at the University of Rhode Island where he developed curricula, and taught courses focused on writing, rhetoric, and digital communication. In particular, he brings experience incorporating multimodal assignments, particularly digital tools, into the classrooms (e.g., wikis, social media). His multimodal communication strengths include writing (print and online) and digital and social media.

Judy Gatton Prats, Director of the UK Writing Center, and Senior Lecturer Faculty in Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies, has taught writing courses and consulted with students and faculty in the Writing Center for thirty years. She currently teaches writing, rhetoric, peer review, argument, group writing, public speaking, visual rhetoric, and digital media.

Molly Reynolds is a faculty lecturer in the Division of Instructional Communication and Research. Molly completed her PhD in 2013 and has focused her teaching and research on interpersonal and instructional communication. Her multimodal communication strengths include basic public speaking, interpersonal communication, popular culture, group communication, and digital and social media.

Brandy Scalise is a full-time lecturer in the division of Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies. Dr. Scalise has taught a variety of courses in rhetoric, including first-year communication and composition, business writing, editing, writing style, and various special topics courses in writing. Her courses stress argumentation, writing process, portfolio keeping, visual rhetoric, and written style.

Jami L. Warren is a faculty lecturer and Assistant Director in the Division of Instructional Communication and Research. Her research has focused on innovative pedagogical strategies, specifically service-learning, and student learning outcomes. Her multimodal communication strengths include basic public speaking, persuasive speaking, group communication, and rubric development/project assessment.

Vershawn Ashanti Young is an associate professor of African American Studies and English. He values collaborative work and has published research with co-authors, including his recent Other People’s English: Code Meshing, Code Switching, and African American Literacy. His multimodal communication strengths include individual and group speaking, reading and listening activities and assessments, student engagement, collaboration in digital spaces (e.g., Adobe ConnectPro), informal and formal writing, and performance.
