The President's Initiative on Undergraduate EducationThe all-university discussion initiated by President Wethington and Chancellor Zinser commenced with a visit to campus by Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny and Dr. Stanley O. Ikenberry on September 9, 1998. Dr. Kenny (President of the State University of New York at Stony Brook) was the Chair of the Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates in the Research University and Dr. Ikenberry (President of the American Council on Education) was a member. The Boyer Commission report is entitled REINVENTING UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION: A Blueprint for America's Research Universities (text version). This report and certain key UK reports, plans and studies form the foundation for the initiative leading to action plans. With the publication of the Boyer Commission report (text version) on undergraduate education at research institutions and with our recent mandate to become a premier research institution, it is appropriate to examine the undergraduate experience at the University of Kentucky with an eye to fulfilling our manifold mission more effectively. To that end, the President is soliciting participation from the Lexington Campus, the Medical Center, and Lexington Community College in a comprehensive review of undergraduate education during the fall term. The program is called The President's Initiative on Undergraduate Education in Kentucky's Comprehensive Research University. It will be built around three broadly based committees which are composed of faculty, students and staff and will focus respectively on the following areas:
Committees will be chaired as follows:
Coordination will be managed by a Steering Committee chaired by Lou Swift, Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Since a report is due in the middle of January, the committee will work quickly and through various means will be soliciting ideas from all faculty, students and staff about enhancing undergraduate education. It it important to recognize that we are not starting with a blank slate. This study will be built upon much work already done at the University, including the Boling Report, the Reedy Report, the Student Satisfaction Study, the Residence Life Report, and discussions already under way in the Undergraduate Council and the University Studies Committee. In short, it will be the culmination of other activities and studies, and we wish to have it in hand for our next budget cycle as well as for the capital campaign. If you have ideas about improving any aspect of the undergraduate experience at the University of Kentucky, please send them to the chairs of the committees at your very earliest convenience. Many thanks.
