Approved Graduation Writing Requirement Courses

Updated 12/10/08

Many students will benefit from fulfilling the requirement multiple times before they graduate.  This is not a requirement to be “gotten over.”

The Graduation Writing Requirement is still a pilot program at UK so course options may change each semester.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about current or future GWR options.

Also, many of these courses that are developed to satisfy the GWR are not new course numbers, but the content and structure of the course has been significantly changed to make the course compliant with Senate mandated GWR requirements. As a result, advisors and students should pay careful attention to the dates of course approval because students can only get GWR credit if they take courses that are approved GWR options.

New courses and recent changes to courses are noted in red.

The Graduation Writing Requirement can be fulfilled in six possible ways:

1.     Honors Program students satisfy both the first-year writing requirement and the Graduation Writing Requirement through that curriculum.  They must complete the entire Honors curriculum to receive full credit.

2.     The following courses are Undergraduate Council and Senate approved permanent GWR courses.  Students in these majors or areas of emphasis are generally required complete the Graduation Writing Requirement through these courses:

3.    The following are courses have been previously approved by Undergraduate Council on a semester-by-semester basis.  Because these courses are only approved on a semester-by-semester basis students and advisors should be aware that they may not always satisfy the graduation writing requirement.  Please also note that even when one of these courses is offered, not all sections of a given course may satisfy the graduation writing requirement.  Note these are all updated as of Fall 09 and subject to change at any time. Students or Advisors should contact the Writing Initiative to verify GWR status on all these courses.

5.     Independent Study offers several courses which can also satisfy the GWR: ENG 203 (Fall 07-Present), ENG 261 (Spring 08 to Present), and ENG 262 (Spring 08- Present).  These are currently the ONLY courses approved for GWR credit that are offered by Independent Study.  Students must be preapproved for GWR credit by the Writing Initiative BEFORE Independent Study will enroll them in the course. This assures that students have their eligibility for GWR credit verified before they start the course. Once they finish the course, students must send the Writing Initiative an assessment paper from the course. Once the Writing Initiative receives the paper the GWR credit will be noted on the student’s transcript and in apex.

6.     Distance Learning offers two courses that can be used to satisfy the GWR: ENG 261 and ENG 262. These are the ONLY courses approved for GWR credit that are offered by Distance Learning.  Distance Learning courses are on a regular semester schedule so students do not need prior approval for enrollment.
