Approved Graduation Writing Requirement Courses

Many students will benefit from fulfilling the requirement multiple times before they graduate.  This is not a requirement to be “gotten over.”

The Graduation Writing Requirement can be fulfilled in many ways:

1)    Honors Program students satisfy both the first-year writing requirement and the Graduation Writing Requirement through that curriculum.  They must complete the entire Honors curriculum to receive full credit.

2)    Students in the following majors or areas of emphasis can complete the Graduation Writing Requirement through course work in their program:

Anthropology: ANT 582

Architecture: ARC 314

Communication Disorders: CD 410/482/483

Communication and Leadership Development: CLD 250

Geography: GEO 300* Note: GEO 300 will NOT be offered as a GWR course after Fall 2008.

History: HIS 490, 499, or 471

Physics: PHY 435 or 535

Russian: RUS 499

Sustainable Agriculture: SAG 201

Social Work: SW 470W

3)    Students can complete the Graduation Writing Requirement by taking a class or a series of classes on the Semester List of Approved Upper-Tier Writing Courses.

These courses are approved on a semester-by-semester basis so students and

advisors should be aware that they may not always satisfy the graduation writing requirement.

Students or Advisors can check with our office to see if semester by semester classes are being offered as Graduation Writing Courses.

Courses which have Previously Been Offered on a Semester by Semester Basis:

ABT 201/301 Scientific Methods in Biotechnology

AEC 580 Agricultural Economics

A&S 300 Indian Film as Postcolonial Text

CE 599 Civil Engineering

COM 351 Communications

CLM 595 Clinical Leadership and Management

NRC 301 Natural Resource Conservation and Management

4)    Students who don’t have the benefit of taking an approved upper-tier writing course within their major field of study can fulfill this requirement by completing a 200-level literature or film course in English:

*ENG 203   Business Writing

ENG 230   Introduction to Literature

ENG 231   Literature and Genre

ENG 232   Literature and Place

ENG 233   Literature and Identities

ENG 234   Introduction to Women’s Literature

ENG 261   Survey of Western Literature from the Greeks Through the

 Renaissance

ENG 262   Survey of Western Literature from 1660 to the Present

ENG 264   Major Black Writers

ENG 270   The Old Testament as Literature

ENG 271   The New Testament as Literature

ENG 281   Introduction to Film

*Students in the College of B&E technically have priority for ENG 203.

ENG 203, ENG 261, and ENG 262 can be taken through Independent Study to satisfy the Graduate Writing Requirement. ENG 203, 261, and 261 are currently the ONLY courses approved for GWR credit that are offered by Independent Study.  Students must be preapproved for GWR credit by the Writing Initiative BEFORE Independent Study will enroll them in the course. This assures that students have their eligibility for GWR credit verified before they start the course. Once they finish the course, students must send the Writing Initiative an assessment paper from the course. Once the Writing Initiative receives the paper and verifies the grade is a C or higher the GWR credit will be noted on the student’s transcript and in apex.

ENG 261 Survey of Western Literature from the Greeks Through the Renaissance can also be taken through Distance Learning to

satisfy the Graduate Writing Requirement.

Eng 261 is currently the ONLY course approved from Distance Learning.

This is taught like a regular semester long class so students do not need prior approval for enrollment.
